I mean, he died this morning. I can't honestly say I was his biggest fan but he was a huge influence in music in the eighties, even through the nineties. He was never really big in the US, but he was huge in Germany.

Sac Arrow at a GI bar in Germany: "You guys listen to American music?"

German dude: "Ja, American music. Meatloaf!"

He was bigger there than the Hoff. But the Hoff came much later.

I don't have a clue who Louis Anderson was. I only knew him as Meatloaf. Don't hate on me.

He will be missed. We saw him in concert once, one of maybe half a dozen I’ve been to in my life. And of course who can forget his stirring (though tragic) performance in Rocky Horror Picture Show?

Louie Anderson was a comedian and comedic actor. Meat Loaf, whose actual name was Marvin Aday, was a singer and actor. These are two different people.

Both were rather portly, so their passing is not too surprising.
 
Beatle like status as a singer in England…not unlike most of Western Europe in his prime.

I’ve watched “Paradise By The Dashboard Light” more times than I can count over the years. Iconic.

She’s married to Robbie Benson, the actor, who’s a cousin - his grandfather and my grandfather were brothers.
 
I disagree with those who say Meatloaf was not big in the USA as he most certainly was. I wore out my Bat Out Of Hell album in the late 70s and the 80s. I still have the CD that I bought later on. It used to be in my 400 disc CD changer that I used to have until it stopped working. Now my entire CD collection is in several boxes, not being played. But when a Meatloaf song comes on the radio or on Pandora, the volume gets cranked, though not as much as it used to. I still love listening to him.
 
And on a related and belated note, Jim Steinman who wrote most of Meatloaf’s songs and played the piano on the songs, passed just last spring. He was a song writing legend.

Agree. He was a legend in Cleveland where he started and put on a hell of a concert. I missed the one where he had his infamous wardrobe malfunction which got him noticed. Local WMMS played Bat every hour on the hour for weeks. Classic especially live. Heard he went back to CLE for a Bat 35th year concert. Wish I could have caught it.
 
One thing that's nice to see in all the press coverage is that nobody has anything bad to say about him. He seemed to be widely acknowledged as one of the genuine nice guys in the business.
 
I didn't like Meatloaf, was barely aware of his music. I'm still mourning Jerry Garcia.

i was going to mention that. jim steinman was just as important to meatloaf's success as meatloaf was or maybe even more. after they had a tiff and split up, meatloaf's career went south. granted he did have a voice problem then also, but his music during that time did very poorly. his career only took back off after they reunited and did bat out of hell II which I thought was better than bat out of hell. to keep it aviation related the video is great
wasted youth is one of my favorite songs. RIP meatloaf

Two other entities made their collaboration take off: an obscure record label in Willoughby, OH and WMMS The Buzzard radio station. Without them I doubt they would have gone mainstream. That said Meat had a pretty good run opening for all the big bands of the time so I doubt he would have starved. He did have a huge following in Europe for years though. One of the better live acts in the mid/late 70s along with the original World Series of Rock I used to go to as a punk kid.
 
Back in the day I played football & worked out the rest of the time. The ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ album was a staple. I think I know most every word.
 
My daughter, a huge fan, and I met “Mr Loaf” backstage before one of his shows. He was very complimentary of my Hawaiian shirt and I of his.

My daughter was semi speechless for about a week. She also has never ceased to remind me that I didn’t ask to swap shirts.

We may have been at the same concert. My wife and I saw him in concert, but I honestly don’t remember if it was Richfield or somewhere else. I still have a WMMS Buzzard jacket in the closet, and might have a bumper sticker still. And we left Cleveland in 1988.

edit: Nope. My wife tells me we saw Meatloaf here in Omaha.
 
For long haired children of the 80s I suppose this is a noteworthy loss. However, many of us have no idea that Meatloaf is anything other than ground beef, onions, breadcrumbs, and catsup. On that note, I hate meatloaf.
 
nothing to add, just incredibly impressed anyone can sing the SSB, with chewing gum in their mouth.
