Citing security concerns, the federal government in secrecy last month ordered every airline in the United States to remove emergency oxygen in every lavatory on all 6,000 domestic commercial aircraft.

I always thought you'd simply passed out or become really stupid during the <5 minute descent. Just assumed the O2 was to keep pax alert enough to evac if needed. Admittedly I don't fly that high, but do the effects of hypoxia intensify towards fatal that quickly at 30,000+?

yes. time of useful consciousness gets down into somewhere between seconds and single digit minutes at 30K. compared to 20K where 10's of minutes could be expected.

True, but I wonder how long someone can survive without permanent brain damage or death. You can do an emergency descent in about 5 minutes. That doesn't mean I think it's a good idea to remove the O2 from the lavs but I also don't think that all, or even most of, the passengers would be able to successfully don their Dixie Cups in that situation.

"Security concerns"? Spontaneous combustion between O2 and methane?
