because I finally bought one this week! I've been flying since 1996 and it has been quite a wait. Was primarily hunting for a Cherokee since early December, but a really nice 1960 C172B popped up only an hour away. Did my first oil change yesterday, and am just waiting on the prop to come back from an overhaul.

It has a nice, but simple IFR 6-pack plus a glideslope and localizer so I can get my IFR ticket plus a digital engine monitor. Really nice white and red paint, and a decent interior. I know there are a bunch of people on here with classic 172s, and I can see why.

Congrats,good luck,had a 62 ,172 loved it.

Congratulations

Sweet. Always liked the early 172s. Keeping it amongst the glider circus?

Welcome to the inner circle :yesnod:
Now let's the spending begin.:cornut:

I'll be keeping it there for a month or two then move to Mansfield.

Who else here has a 172 fastback?

Also, after 6 solid months of barnstormers, trade a plane, and controller, it is nice to be free from checking alllll the time.

Congratulations on getting a nice looking 172. I think the 172 is a very good all-around aircraft. I hope you enjoy yours as much as we did the one we had a few years ago. Ours was a 172G, a few years younger than yours. The only consistent problem we had was lead fouling the plugs. I kept it leaned, even while taxiing, and used TCP on most of the fill-ups.

Lean hard on the ground to prevent fouled plugs. Hard enough that if you need more power (as pulling from the grass onto pavement), the engine tries to die. That will generally minimize lead balls in your plugs. Go back to rich for the runup then takeoff. I pull back to lean as I'm leaving the runway after landing.

Our's is a 172G, also with the mighty O-300. It already came with a Mogas STC. Using mogas will solve the lead fouling issues, ethanol free fuel is in some areas however hard to find.

Our airport does not (yet) sell mogas, we therefore have to haul it in.

I had a '57 172. Loved it. Sweet little plane. Shoulda never sold it.

And I agree with Oliver. Burn lots of ethanol free MoGas if you can find it. Your engine will thank you. O-300s really don't like 100 LL.

I'm big on leaning so we should get along. Yeah, it has three different tires and they are on their way to needing to be done, so why not put on some fresh shoes? Already ordered her a new canopy cover and did an oil change on Friday.

Not much mogas in New England except Hampton.

Amen to that! I know exactly what you mean. Congrats on the new plane! Have a ton of fun with it!

Looks like a fair amount to me. You gotta pump it and transfer.

Like the 60 model with the tube fuselage and swept tail with 40deg of flaps. My buddy has one and it's a good flier.

Sanford has it as well. Restaurant isn't bad there, either. Heads up when flying there, the locals do whacky things in the pattern.

If you head North, drop me a note. Always looking for people to go flying with. I've been thinking of doing a grass strip tour of NH and ME...

I live right at the intersection of 495 and 90, so no convenient Mogas. Wish it were available though. I should get the prop back this week. I'm like a kid on Christmas with an awesome new toy and no batteries.
