Everything Offends Me
That wasn't so bad, I suppose. I went to the court, had to go through an arraignment, where I talked to a city attorney. He dropped the no insurance and no registration violations when I showed the proof. Then the deal bartering began.

Originally, he offered a 90 day deferred sentence on both the speeding and the motorcycle endorsement violations, but he was informed that the judge would deny a deferment on a license violation. So he came back with a dismissal of the motorcycle endorsement if I plead guilty to the speeding and agreed to take driver improvement school, which I jumped on.

I went before the judge, who accepted the plea agreement, and all seemed well. I sat down, awaiting to pay, when I was called back up again.

"I didn't notice you had a warrant for failure to appear. What happened?"

I explained, nicely, that I was misinformed that I could reschedule over the phone, and that as soon as I got back into town, I came to the courthouse as soon as possible. She seemed to accept that, and split the warrant fee 50/50 with me.

So to recap:
No proof of insurance: Dismissed
No proof of registration: Dismissed
No motorcycle endorsement: Dismissed
Speeding (16-20 over): Deferred 90 days
Contempt of Court (FTA): Guilty

I didn't bother to fight the fact that the speeding was different on my ticket and the docket, as I just wanted to get out of there without jail time. My license had been suspended, and I have to go to the MVD to get it reinstated, which means I'm looking for a ride to work today. I'll be damned if I'm gonna bust my deferment over a no license violation again.

Man, Nick, it's insane that you had to go through so many hopes and so much time.

Is the contempt of court a misdemeanor? :hairraise:

Congrats on no jail. Sounds like you handled it well.

Sounds like you missed a PERFECT opportunity to do your presentation of the "You want the truth!? You can't HANDLE the truth!" I'm disappointed, Nick. I expected more out of you. ;)

Nick,

Now, quit smoking and get a bicycle and all of this could have been averted. Who gets pulled over for speeding on bicycle? :D

Nick:

Good result. I can tell (without having been there) that you put on your best, no-bad-attitude face, and worked the system like it has to be worked.

It ain't personal- it's like the wind. It'll blow whether you like it or not.

Told ya so, BTW, what was the final bill?

Surprisingly not bad. About $225, minus the cost of the driver improvement class. Don't mean to harp on lawyers (as I respect a good many of them), but there's no way I'd have gotten off that cheap with a lawyer.

Yeah, you do realize though, that you got off easy because of illegal aliens right? When you come in nicely dressed and polite amoungst the vatos, esseys and homeys, the judge automatically cuts you some slack for showing their court some respect.

The highest bill I got was a little less than $400 and that was the one in Wisconsin where 1) I had to find a lawyer on the Wisconsin Bar, and 2) she had to plead for me. As I recall the trick was to plead guilty to a charge that didn't exist in Illinois so I wouldn't have a record in Illinois. There's no walking in Wisconsin.

I had a lawyer in Chicago that was doing radio ads, and it was $150, although that was 10 years ago. It seems to me that the lawyers had their rates at about the same as the fine+costs the suckers were paying. Chicago.

Don't forget to report the Driver Improvement School in block 18v on your next FAA medical application.

Do I also need to report the suspended driver's license as well? Its only been suspended for 1 week.

Yes. Make sure to word it so that it is clear it was not alcohol related.

Nice work Nick, I did just buy a new mountain bike so I will try to keep my speed down.
