My Nexus 7 is first-gen, and just over a year old (Christmas gift).

I use it pretty heavily, basically plugging it in to charge every night. The last week or two I've noticed it doesn't hold a charge nearly as long as it used to.

It used to go at least 12-14 hrs (the way I used it), now it's around 9-10 hrs.

Could be: Battery is starting to get weak, or there is an app that's sucking it down.

I don't think there are any apps running that I don't know about. I try to keep it pretty clean. But, I have added quite a few over the last year.

Anybody have and ideas on how to tell if it's an app or just a battery that's starting to lose it?

I have an original Nexus 7. I'm not sure how long my battery is lasting me these days, but if I go to "Settings/Battery" for usage culprits, I'm showing:

Screen: 76%
Calendar: 13%
Android System: 4%
4 others, using about 3% each.

Hmmm...

Screen: 32%
Exchange services: 14%
Android system: 14%
Android OS: 13%
E-mail: 11%

Then a handful in the 2-5% range.

Looks like my e-mail system uses up 25%. I don't know why I have Android system and OS showing as two deals for 27%.

I've noticed that with mine too. I don't use it for anything but Garmin Pilot and a used to use a Dauntless app. It seemed like it used to go for a couple days before it was gone and now its about half that. I wonder if the latest version is any better.

Yes, it's a lot better. I have both. when I gave the original to my wife, I did a factory reset. That seemed to help the original n7 as well in terms of battery life.

But the new one will last a week or more in standby. Never got that outta the old one.

There is a long-time (and AFIK unsolved) problem with the original Nexus 7. Possibly with the new version as well, I don't know. It may be what you're seeing.

Basically the problem is that "something" (unknown) prevents the tablet from going into deep sleep by causing a "wakelock." When this happens, battery usage skyrockets. Overnight, I'll see a few percent of battery loss when the tablet is in deep sleep and I'll see a 30% loss when it's not.

Masochistic? Go here: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/mobile/6BMhGQtI79Q

My theory is that at least one of the apps that spies on us (location reporting, facebook, etc.) is the culprit. I have disabled all of them that I can find and uninstalled many. This has led to a few months of relative calm with good battery life. But just in the past week or two, my wakelock problem is back. Apparently something that I have updated is now causing wakelocks again. So now I am going to go again on an app search and destroy mission. Prime suspect currently is Google Keep, which I have just disabled.

The app causing the problem does not show up as having high battery usage, unfortunately. It is the Android OS that is kept awake and shows the usage, so looking at usage numbers is not helpful.

To see this, install the free app JuicePlotter. If you let your tablet sit quietly overnight, JuicePlotter will either show you a flat line with a couple of bumps in it (good) or it will show you a sort of staircase of battery decline (bad).

"CUP Spy Plus" and "BetterBatteryStats" are somewhat useful when trouble-shooting. "Wakelock Detector" was very good but KitKat has broken it. No word on an update.

HTH. If you find the magic bullet, please let me know.
