In an interesting discussion of differences in religions this evening, I naively entered "what religion should I be?" on Google.

The first link took me to http://www.beliefnet.com/Entertainment/Quizzes/BeliefOMatic.aspx

The 'Belief-O-Matic' personality quiz is 20 questions designed to determine which religion most closely matches your beliefs; religions are ranked in percentage order. I wasn't sure if this was purely entertainment or not, but decided to give it a try.

Grant and I were both very surprised to learn my results:

Well, Leslie, just goes to show how silly such "here's what you are" surveymatics are.

I took it a few months ago, wrote down the results... shredded them last week! Too bad you didn't ask til now. Interestingly, the "last" result on the list ended up being a religion I was born into. Hmmmm.... I guess it really wasn't a good fit for me, huh?

I found a snippet of my results in a Facebook message I sent to my nephew (he took it first, which is how I came to take it):

It said my three best matches were Secular Humanism at 100%, Unitarian Universalism at 93%, and Non-theist at 80%. I have no idea what those first two are, so I'll have to go look them up. The "interesting part" was what it rated as my three worst matches and, in particular, the worst match. They were, in order, Orthodox Judaism at 12%, Roman Catholicism at 12%, and... (drum roll please)... Jehovah's Witnesses at a paltry 7%.

Well, being genetically descended from celtic/druid ancestors, in the old days, I would have been that guy with blue clay smeared on his face, running around swinging a big sword, and generally being difficult..
Moving to more modern times, the family having been starved out of Ireland during the potato famine and coming to America in the stinking bilge of a tramp freighter, saved me from becoming an IRA gunman...
By being born here, I really hit the bottom, becoming a pilot flying around in one of those dangerous little planes and causing grave concern to the HSA...

I find the results accurate. I wonder what this Theravada Buddhism is. I was raised a Unitarian. I married a Greek Orthodox. My kids are Greek Orthodox. I'm just a little concerned that I rate Scientology above their religion. :yikes:

Actually, I have heard of them, and surprisingly enough there are more Jews. As I understand it, most are in Iran, where they are heavily persecuted by the Iranian government. Might explain the HQ in Haifa, the only country in the ME with any religious freedom.

I actually did the test twice since so most had options I didn't totally agree with...just to see the differences. The first results are from the first take...second results are from the 2nd take...interesting that the Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestant didn't change all that much while some did.

I forget which now, but the first two were the mainline to ____ Christian Protestant.

We belong to a Presbyterian church (PC USA), I grew up (to the very limited degree church was attended) in the Episcopal church. Dribs and drabs of Southern Baptist influence, and nearly all our family friends, growing up, were Jewish.

Fun fact: When I was a kid, we were the token Goyim at the Julius Schepps Jewish Community Center.

I resemble that remark...as far as growing up with a hodge-podge of influences.
 
They tried to raise me a roman catholic but I was tossed out of catholic school in the second grade... Funny thing... I am now deathly scared of large penguins and my knuckles are all disfigured..:lol::lol::lol::rofl::arf:
 
The international headquarters of the Baha'i Faith are in Haifa, Israel because of banishments, by the Shah or Iran and the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in 1868, of Baha'u'llah the Prophet-Founder. Now the Baha'is in Iran are accused of being Zionists and spying for Israel!!! They have a lot of facts mixed up!

There are more Jews in the world than Baha'is, but in the last 150 years the Baha'i Faith has become, according to the World Christian Encyclopedia, the second most widespread religion in the world.

The basic teaching of the Baha'i Faith is that human society is entering a new stage, one where we can destroy all life on earth, or we can work together and build a civilization like no one has dreamed of before. I choose the latter myself.

Spiritually it teaching that every human has an eternal soul and the purpose of life on earth is to develop our spiritual attributes so that when we leave the physical world we can function in the next/spiritual world.

There are various references in Baha'i scripture to the Big Bang that started creation, evolution as a fact, and space and time travel (the last as a possibility once technology gets that far). And there are warnings about ground pollution, atmospheric poisoning and global warning.

It's a religion that deals with modern problems and possible solutions.

What "widespread" actually means is problematic in this context. Since the major two religions (in terms of population) have members on every continent including Antarctica, it doesn't refer to geographic spread. If it means number of adherents then that factoid is incorrect, if Baha'i is second in population and there are more Jews then Judaism would be first, and there are fewer Jews than Jains or Wiccans. I doubt it is the most rapidly expanding, though I'm not certain which club gets that honor these days (it was the Mormons for a long time).
