New Tom Cruise Top Gun

Do you think they can make it better than the original?

I think it could be interesting if you put F-35 vs drone concept into film but that would have nothing to do with Top Gun. I also know Cruise is all about real flying vs CGI but I don't think that'll happen either. Even if they used real, it's already been done before with the original Top Gun.

The movie was a classic and had real breakthroughs in cinema photography and music. Just let it die as a classic.

How many times will he get to say "I'll hit the breaks and he'll fly right by"

The real question is will he play true to his age. If so, he won't be flying much, maybe a tanker hop while the young to middle age guns go off to do some real flying.

Will he have his teeth fixed? They were horrible in the first movie.

I'm going to guess he plays more of a Viper role

The real star of Top Gun was the F-14 and, alas, they have all retired from film making.

Probably hard to tell as my avatar is cropped quite a bit. My staff bought me a legit replica Top Gun jacket for my birthday a couple years back. It was a semi gag gift but hell I love it. Sometimes with first time pax (never flown before) I will break it out. You know they have to feel so much safer when I show up with all those patches. My avatar was a profile view of me in the jacket that I sent to my staff before the first flight wearing it.

I will definitely have to watch the new one but don't really have high expectations. The old one is def a classic that won't be matched. Somewhat cheesy in hindsight but it was the 80's and the norm.

I hope there is a cameo appearance for Val Kilmer, before it is too late.

And maybe for Kelly Mcgillis!

Maybe we'll have a Final Countdown remake and today's Nimitz will go back 40 years...well that won't work.

Some movies are better off not doing sequels. Jaws comes to mind.

Well, much has changed. The Navy relocated its Navy Fighter Weapons School, or TOPGUN, from NAS Miramar to NAS Fallon in Nevada in 1996. The Marines now own Miramar.

This is one of my favorite movies, and responsible for a large portion of my airplane obsession. If they go here, they better not f it up. I won't forgive easily...

One of the biggest flaws in the original was that it starred Tom Cruise, so probably not.

Well, it did get him his start to his millions!

He will probably be the pudgy Navy Captain running the school, and flying a desk!

Flew a couple of hops back seat in a Tomcat after the movie was released with the West Coast RAG. All-around excellent experience (including the Miramar O Club Bar). BTW, other than the ranges, Miramar sure beats Fallon.

The Sequel will not equal the original.

Cheers

Wasn't it supposed to come out in 2016? When are they planning on starting the filming? Because Tom Cruise was bought by Marvel and I cannot envision him having much free time to do another Top Gun.

Too late, they already effed up the first one.
I too still like it, despite all its MANY flaws but I guess I started liking the movie when I didn't know better and chose to ignore the flaws so I still enjoy it from time to time.
If it was up to me, I wouldn't only fire the final editor, I would have asked Tony Soprano to feed him to the fishes or put him in a bridge. Those flying scenes are so messed up, even a non-pilot can tell and that's not good.

I hope the new bad movie will be a little better in that department. Though CGI movies are usually pretty well edited. Crossing fingers. If they ever make one. We'll see.

I'll be interested to see where Pete Mitchell is in his career considering he was an O-3 back in 1986. Conservatively, that means he'd have gotten his commission in 1983 which means he's either a flag officer (and certainly not flying), or he'd have been forced into retirement a decade ago...

How is kilmer going to do this? He can't even speak. I feel bad for him. But I can't see how they will bring iceman back

The Duffel Blog is the military's equivalent of the Onion. If that's the original source the PO is citing, we could be waiting a while for TG2. o_O

Lol! That was a good one man. Saw The Final Countdown in the theater. Like Top Gun, a bit cheesy but both aviation classics.

Speaking of the Carl Vinson, saw this pic online. Great assortment of aircraft that we'll never see again. Taken by Lt Mitchell as well. :D

Great photo! Looks like all the Sqn C/O's and the CAG.

Cheers

What a pile of MTV glop that flick was. Everyone lapped it up of course. I was very disappointed as I was expecting
something reasonably serious, after not long I realized it was sadly drivel. Nolan's Dunkirk might bring some realistic dog fighting to screen though.
I think Cruise should battle Xenu this time, and come out of the closet finally, Navy is good with it now.

If they had made the dogfights realistic, everyone would have been bored to death. The goal was to take something that occurs miles away and bring it in close so the audience can better understand. Even the pilots who were part of the filming were impressed with the end result. With the advent of CGI, no one goes to those lengths anymore in aerial photography.
