Dorn was checked out in jets decades ago, owned one (may still own it) but it was often written into his contracts he wasn't allowed to fly it during filiming. Yet Nimoy used his twin all the time to take his family on vacations, etc.

Go look them up & see the ratings - verrrry interesting.

Head immediately to the US consulate. A phone call to the FAA can result in an immediate fax/email of a temporary flight certificate. Don't know if the Consulate can issue a passport/other ID.

Consulate can issue a passport yes. Temporary flight certificate can be downloaded or emailed. But if the pilot's wallet was stolen, he likely lost his medical certificate too. Don't know if that can be reissued as easily.

Yeah I saw Worf on the "wings channel" (remember that?) years ago, flying his jet. I had no clue about the other two. Interesting!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend! Thanks to you all who have recommended a pilot to contact, who in turn recommended another pilot, who has arranged for me to get a little tour today at Santa Monica Airport of an aircraft. I'll hopefully get to see the controls and have a whole new set of questions ready for comanchepilot when we take to the skies in a few weeks!

I'll touch base with you all after my visit. I've really enjoyed hearing the stories of why you all began flying and such. I talked to the producers and plan to have POA in the thank you credits!

Let's see if anyone has that extra POA Baseball cap!

You can watch videos from ATP on YT. ATP teaches the type of callouts that commercial pilots use. Around 7:20 on the below vid, the pilot has captured his left/right (localizer) and up/down (glideslope) indicators that wll guide him to the runway.

Most will be Greek to you but you can puzzle out a lot of it and hear what it sounds like in the cockpit.

Hey All!

Yesterday's tour was fun. I spent about two hours there talking to a woman who is also an instructor at Van Nuys. Her fried runs a small school at the Santa Monica Airport and I got to pick his brain a little.

There was a guy who the day before had just completed his first SOLO flight, and he was back yesterday looping the airport taking off/landing. He was hoping to get some night hours in, but it didn't look like it was in the cards.

I got to tour an aircraft, which you'll see in the video below. I think I mentioned, it seems like we will be using a lear jet in the movie, but this was still helpful for me just to be around this one plane. I was able to see a few lear jet's land and take off and I couldn't believe the difference in SOUND. You could hear them coming from a while away, where as the other planes, just crept up on you.

It was a fascinating experience, and I hope to have some more like it before I leave for Colombia. I could see how easy it would be to get, hooked ;)

It's like 10 minutes away, so I'll probably spend more time there leading up to my departure, to continue to take it in, and pick the brains of the surrounding pilots/students.

Having done camera work for a TV station when I was young, I'm pretty sure that being in front of the cameras is a different skill set than being behind them!

Ace, someday go fly an aircraft like you sat in. Those LSA's can be the sports cars of the fleet and are lots of fun.

If you do take lessons, and the school offers a Diamond DA20 as an option, that is a really nice training aircraft. C172s are also nice, but the wrap around view of the DA20 cockpit is awesome.

I have a question. I sense a certain level of anonymity/privacy enforced on here from a lot of you. Is that a protection for the trade, or just coincidence? I know as an actor, we openly market ourselves and it comes with the territory that people know who you are and such.

I'm wondering if it is a certain trait that ties into being a pilot somehow.

Strictly personal preference; most of the most active posters here are known by name to most participants, and (as a matter of good fortune), many here have met each other by fortunate virtue of the magic of the Internet, and the mobility of flight.

If you look at the thread about the Gaston's Fly In, for example, pretty much everyone who attended became acquainted first here at PoA, or on one of a couple of other web boards.

Pilots of America can claim one married couple, met through the board (and yes, both pilots).

Watch, you'll know who is who.

As for me, I am called "Spike Cutler," because... well, it's my name.

Not really. Just the nature of forums and people on the internet. On the BeechTalk forum (emphasis is Beechcraft planes) they require you to use your real full name to register and display.
 
It is probably difficult for an actor to comprehend that some of us don't want to be in the public eye, or be visible on this kind of forum. I have nothing to hide, I just don't want somebody to google my name (I'm a business owner) and see my posts here and maybe comment on the fact that i shouldn't be flying (dangerous hobby in the minds of many out there unfortunately thanks to the disproportionate media attention to small plane accidents). Like others have said, it is a personal choice.

Ace is a name that some pilots have been given or used too... How did you come up with it? Um, your parents met in a casino and you are the first born? Just kidding, but I am curious about the moniker.
If you ever come out to west Texas I'll take you for a flight in the mountains.. Google big bend Natl park and you'll see where I live.

It was an open box crappy camcorder from long gone Circuit City. I purchased it during the dark ages (pre iphone era ) :lol:
 
I don't use my first name because it is so unique. You can google my first name, and at least through the first 10 pages (I stopped counting after 10), the links all are about me, including business address and employer. I just am uncomfortable with my name out there on message boards like this one. I prefer a certain level of anonymity in my posts. If I meet you in person, that's a different matter.

I have given my last name to those I meet in person, but I don't post it online. This thread started by someone finding me through "Valium" and "Pilot" which just shows how powerful Google is.

I have gone to great lengths (facebook, here, etc) to not link anything personal with anything work related. I found out employers (when you are job hunting) often look to the internet first and read up on people. I'm not doing anything wrong but I don't want to be a click away.

I have ways that I prevent the above from happening. At the same time, Kimberly is my real name and I use my real location etc. So I'm sort of anon.
