Final Approach
I took delivery of a 414 today, 414MM, it’s got low time Ram 335 hp engines, GTN 530/430 WAAS and flies like a dream! Put about 2 hours on her, 3 approaches and 4 landings, it’s like riding a bike!
182, 310R, 414A, 441, 551, 414A, 421B, 425, 414. I’m partial to CessnasWhat has your progression been? You had a 414 or 421 in the past if memory serves.
I felt like I was learning all over again! It had been about 10 years since I’d even started a piston powered airplane, I told my CFI to walk me through the start up, he kinda laughed, he finally figured out I was serious. It took 4-5 hours to get comfortable that time. This time was pretty easy, I felt at home on the first take off roll. Jets are definitely easier to fly!!Congrats!
How was the adjustment going from 551 -> back to pistons? I’m sure the pocketbook was happy but wasn’t that hard to adjust to? I can’t imagine going back to pistons after getting used to turbofans.
I was actually looking at 210’s, but for the money savings I can buy a lot of gas and mx! I like the 310’s, I don’t like climbing on the wing to enter, but more importantly, my wife hates it! Also I’d have to be lifting my two dogs onto the wing, and they are 50 and 60 lbs! Before we got the first 414, an old friend told me, “Don’t ever let your wife sit in a 400 series Cessna unless you plan to buy one” He was correct, it’s hard to go back!Congratulations! It looks like you’re especially fond of the 414s. What keeps bringing you back? I would expect a downsizing move to go farther down, like a 310, rather than from a Conquest to its supposedly less reliable piston engined brother. (And as a 310 caretaker, I’m always curious about future paths I might take.)
I always thought another 100hp per side would make it even better.

It’s actually pretty quiet, the previous owner did a ton of soundproofing stuff and it works! Yeah, speeds are different for sure, but I was flying to Destin and back a lot. It was 1:00 to 1:10 in the 551 and 1:30 in the 414 and 421B. But man did I miss a lot of Amex points!What about comfort/speed? I imagine losing the speed and smooth, quiet experience of a jet would be a bit of a bummer though. Do pax wear headsets in the 414? I have never been in one.
