My sister works for a wireless carrier other than SBC/Cingular. This was sent out to them today:

"On June 16, 2005, SBC (Southwestern Bell) customers may (probably will) incur toll charges when calling a wireless phone from their landline. This is a SBC thing and we have no control over it and it impacts all wireless carriers."

Just another reason to dump the regular landline carriers IMHO. Can they figure out any other reason to add fees???

I haven't heard this from anywhere else.. has anyone?

Lisa,

At one time there was a move to implement "Calling Party Pays" for mobile phones. It never really happened.

I don't know anything about this initiative, but I wouldn't be surprised if SBC were trying this because they're ultra money hungry and they're seeing so much erosion of their landline base. Also they own 50% of Cingular.....

The last straw for me was having to pay almost $100 a year to NOT be put in the directory, $8 a month, recurring....like the check box on the computer has to be unchecked every month...

I switched to Vonage - I got fed up of paying more in fees and surcharges than I did for the calls. We've had it about a month now - have all the features that cost extra from the phone company but come free with Vonage, and best of all, we have local phone numbers near our across-state family which means they can call us for free ;) My bill for unlimited USA and Canada Calling and all the rest, was under $35 for the month.

I haven't had a landline phone in about 5 years. Got tired of paying $40 per month for something that I never used. I do not miss it at all!

Those of you with Vonage, beware the future.

The FCC has mandated that Vonage find a way to handle & route 911 calls. SBC is being uncooperative with Vonage in setting this up. I think Vonage has complained to the FCC. If Vonage can't handle 911, they may have to stop selling service. SBC knows that...
