Can I get a little help setting up a Christmas gift?
I Tunes needs to be installed. My concern is the disk space on my laptop. Can I install I-tunes on my laptop but have all the files on a back up hard drive? I just don't want all those files on my laptop.

If that can be done, can you tell me where it allows it?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Dave,

Yes, that can be done. I don't have the Windows version, so I don't know what the exact steps would be for you. For me, there's a setting under Preferences->Advanced called iTunes Music Folder Location. If you change that to your backup hard drive, you'll be all set.

I'd also enable the option that copies files to your iTunes Music Folder when adding them to the library (right below). That way, you can just open a song in iTunes, and it will copy it to your backup hard drive. You can then delete the original file.

Hey Dave,

When you get that figured out will you stop by mom's apartment and help her with the i-recorder thing she's supposed to use to answer the questions in the family history book here grandkids bought her for Christmas. She lives in N. Dallas, so it won't be a long drive for you. Let me know when you've available so I can driver over and watch.

Your friend,

Wayne

PS: She's 96.

Nothin like friends that need help with parents <g>. I have a former friend that recently asked a favor something like that!

Still want to link up sometime when I get back in Big D.

BTW, didn't see you weighing in with help on the Texas Restaurants thread--don't you have some free time?

Best,

Dave

Looking forward to getting together for some grins.

I stayed out of the restaurant deal because I figured that any problem related to eating in Texas was something that Cutler was much more qualified to handle.

I'll tell mom to expect a call from you soon.

Happy new year.

Felix is correct in how to do it.

When I had my iTunes on a PC I did exactly the samething and it would work most of the time. But after some iTunes updates the directory would be changed back to the iTunes default. Thsi drove me crazy and I ended up with two music libraries. I eventually had to pull everything off of the computer and start fresh again. When it happened a 2nd time I opted to move my library to my then new Mac.

I suspect that if you reinstall iTunes or install an update without the external drive present, it will create a new folder in the default location. It's likely that the install would fail if there were no library folder at all.

I've been running iTunes for a couple of years now on XP with all the media files on a network drive. Works great, and it lets my wife have her own copy of iTunes on her laptop pointed to the same drive. Only have to rip the disc once, then import it into iTunes as needed.
