Hey all,, newbie....I didnt see an "introduction" forum so this looked like a place I might could start.Late comer, got my ticket at 58, VFR SEL..little over 300 hours now...seriously thinking about an IFR rating...fly for fun. 400 mile XC to see the grandkids once in awhile...Cherokee guy

I joined the forum using a new to me refurbed lap top:rolleyes: no pictures loaded..Im based in Western KY ..2I0.. 1975 PA28-140

Fellow Piper guy here with roughly the same hours. '72 Piper Arrow II. Out of the Chicago area (KDPA).

Thanks for the welcomes!... my bird is old school IFR, ( no gps)I'm in quagmire about getting an IFR rating with the tech I have on board...Not a lot of VORs still online around here...priced updating to a IFR GPS... made my stomach hurt. I kinda want to do the ground school just cause this ole brain needs a good work out..

Welcome. Instrument rating will increase your skills and flying utility. Don't do what I did and putz around with it for 20 years.

Well, this is aviation. We expect you to be broke like us, so drop $25k in your panel and get to work son! I for example just spent my nest egg on a new engine for my 1954 airplane. Once I get a little more jingle in my pocket I plan to use it on a some IFR panel goodies. These maybe a repaint in a few years. After reskinning some stuff of course. The mohair upholstery stays though!
 
25k is it possible to get anything done with that in the aviation world? :eek:

Welcome to the forum!
The IFR ticket is worth the work. It opens up travel even if it's just getting out and above a layer to get on your way to see those grandkids.
 
Welcome aboard! I concur with everyone else. Go after that IFR ticket, not only does it challenge you and make you more precise in your flying, but it’s fun!

Don't necessarily need GPS for IFR. Just need to be adequately equipped to do the 3 types of approaches. A GPS approach is not a required item. Nor do you need to learn GPS to get that rating. (Is GPS useful?...absolutely. Required? No. Let's admit that, people).

Well I have two,,,but not one on a legal panel mounted IFR box :rolleyes:

If nothing else in the short term I think I'll get in an online ground school. Recommendations welcome..

That's great. Then you can be good to go. As long as there are airports in your area where you can do enough (ILS, VOR, LOC) approaches consider getting started without GPS. Get and learn GPS (on your own terms) after you get your rating.
 
Noah, Thats been my fall back plan...Have a guy that will give me a King 94 with all the accessories, but from what I'm gathering the cost of the install ..and not having waas isnt worth it...As mentioned, I really think I need the ground school regardless if I ever get the rating it aint like you can know too much..off to the fight...errr flight training forum o_O
