Hello all. I have business to conduct in Merrimack, NH and Providence, RI next Thursday.

If the weather allows, I plan on flying the Cherokee to KASH (Nashua, NH) and KOQU (Quonset State, Providence, RI). My family is probably going to tag along and make a mini vacation out of the trip.

If you were in the NH, MA, CT, RI area for a 2-day weekend, where might you take your family for fun ?

Incidentally, my kids are 2 and 4 and equally obsessed with planes and boats as I am, so aviation or boating related suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Nathan

Flying to Block Island (KBID) is always nice for a weekend getaway. The airport there is nice, the island is pretty and a lot of fun. It may not be directly aviation or boat related, but they do have a good amount of boat stuff, and there's the airport. I made a nice day trip out of BID with some friends last summer, and would certainly do it again. It is best on warm summer days, though, since it then allows you to take advantage of the beach/water.

Newport (UUU) is really nice, as is Block (BID) as Ted suggested. The vineyard and nantucket are also nice places, but rather expensive.

While Block Island is a great summertime stop, there is not much going on there now! It is a very seasonial Island.

Why not rent a car from KOQU area and visit the Mystic Seaport and Aquarium? A short drive West in mystic, CT > Fun for kids and adults.

Jason is on track with Newport! Also, lots to do for both.

Good call, Andy, BUT, if Mystic is the destination and you've already got the plane, I'd fly into Groton, CT (GON) and rent a car there rather than driving all the way down from Quonset.

It is still a little cold on the islands. Mystic is a great idea for kids.

Hey Jim, I thought by using Quonset as a central stop, he could go either to Newport or Mystic easily. Or as you suggested, fly to either Newport &
Groton and taxi / or rent a car.

Whatever floats his boat :rofl::smilewinkgrin:

Mystic is great. KBDL and the New England Air Museum is wonderful as well. KEEN with the flight around Monadnock is a blast.

Cheers,

-Andrew

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Now I just need the weather to cooperate.

Another vote for Mystic. If you land in Groton and you have time, you can check out the Nautilus (1st nuclear sub). Newport, RI has a bunch of houses built the wealthy people in the guilded age (Vanderbilt, Carnegie, JP Morgan, etc) and a nice walk along the ocean. Block Island is quiet now- most things open after Memorial day and the water is rather cool right now. The airport isn't very near the town- it can be walked, but not with 2 & 4 year olds.

Providence, RI is a queer little town but, like Block Island, I'd expect it to be mostly closed down before the summer season.

I'd consider going to Boston- lots of history there.
