to let me create new photo albums and move photos from one album to another on the iPad WITHOUT using iTunes & a tether to a computer.

In other words, I can download photos from a camera, they go into an "imported photos" album. I want to create other albums and move the photos to those albums within the iPad standalone, without connection to a laptop or use of iTunes. (I will then access the album & send the files to my NAS, again without iTunes intervention).

Can it be done? If so, what app?

What's your problem? ;)

Do you have the camera connection kit for the iPad?

I believe iOS5 will be adding this kind of functionality (I was surprised recently too when I realized one couldn't make new albums or reorganize directly on a friend's iPad).

Quick search found this:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photo-manager-pro/id393858562?mt=8

You may need a separate file sharing program for the NAS part of the equation.

NAS part is covered. The NAS maker kindly provides the apps. The Android app works great. The iPad app will not read from the "imported images" album, but it reads fine from the iPad camera album.

Network Attached Storage.

Basically a humungos disk drive that's part of the cloud local area network - think of it the same way you think of a portable disk drive only accessable to anyone on the network.

Ahhhh, I gotcha. Well if you have that, then Dropbox really wouldn't be much help, would it! :D

Semi-success.

I found a work-around that will handle the JPEG files (but not raw). The app Photo+Folder HD will import the JPEG files from the iPad albums and export them back out to Camera Roll. The Thecus NAS app will upload files from Camera Roll album (but won't do the imported files album). And I can do it over the VPN.

Now I need to find a way to do this with the CR2 (raw) files....
