[NA] Where to buy a winter home?

Hi all~

Looking around for a nice walkable community for a winter home, it can be a condo or a house, but ideally want a middle aged community ideally full of people in their 30s-50s that is a very active and walkable community that has enjoyable weather in the winter months approx November - April.

Things that sound exciting are:
-Walkable to restaurants local bar grocery (15-20min)
-Big wide front porch
-Condo with terrace / roof deck with amazing views
-Outdoor space, parking for RV and toys, etc
-Scenic overlooks
-Close to all sports lakes
-Close to extreme hiking trails
-Not a transient community (not full of airbnbs)
-Not 55+ communities (we are not there yet)
-Lots of people walking around the community
-Clean and well maintained community, modern or old with charm both are fine

Of course cannot get everything but if you have any ideal winter home spots please do share so we can start having a look around. Thanks!
 
Alpine outside Jackson’s Hole would seem to fit that description.

You forgot a great place to let the puppies run too.
 
Doesn’t check the lakes and trails boxes, but Port Aransas, Tx checks all the others I think. If you are in a high-rise condo. I’ve often thought of wintering there and summering in New Mexico some day.
 
Taos or Angel Fire NM is on my list. Don't think it entirely aligns with what you're looking for.
 
I don't see winter sports on your list of 'wants'. With everything else on your list you are pretty much down to the desert southwest.
 
We could be ok with either a winter sports destination or a warm beach destination. We had plenty of fun in both places during the winter. If a winter sports place then mountains lakes and extreme hiking would be ideal. Dog friendly communities are ideal too. Have not placed a budget yet.

A number of my friends who had/have a similar quest, decided to get (buy or lease) a nice RV and spent extended time in various locations to smoke check how life would be before getting something more permanent. Most went along the Gulf Coast TX/AL/FL. The rest you could split between the GA/SC and AZ/NM. They tried to get me to camp follow, but since my winters are mild, I head far north in the middle of the summer for a month or 2 for the cool weather. Good luck.

Yeah I guess we could use the RV, probably more practical.

At least until you're sure of the location. A couple friends ditched the RV and now have condos in GA and AL.

Some nice options there, going to make a point to visit and check it out.
