My new job has me traveling a lot, and customer sites don't often have VPN, so after much reading/research, I took the deep dive of faith and purchased a Verizon 4G LTE USB Modem (LG 600). It arrived today.

My home internet connection is the fastest Charter.com cable connection they provide, and I've been pleased with it. Here's Speedtest.net results for that connection, today at 2:15PM CST, running on my Windows 7 64-bit desktop (8GB RAM, quad core Athlon processor):

Here's the results for the 4G LTE, running on my work laptop sitting right next to it. It should be noted that the connection only had two bars of signal when this test was ran. I'll be on the road to frigid Minneapolis tomorrow night, will report on Wednesday evening or Thursday if I have signal there, and post results as well.

So far, quite impressed. The wireless 2-bar signal outperformed my hardwired cable modem.

That cable service isn't very good. I'm getting >32M down and >6.5M up on my Cox cable service.

I could be convinced to go to LTE once they come out with a mifi-type device. I not terribly impressed with Sprint's 3G nor the reports of throttling on their 4G service through Clear.

Hmmm. It's better than mine:

Kent, cable is shared bandwidth. Evening is a bad time to compare against my 3:11 test. Try it in the afternoon on a weekday, or middle of the night (when neighbors aren't online streaming Netflix) and see what you get.

Agree. Though my tests were done at a variety of times, including 8 PM on a weeknight.... the results are pretty constant. I suspect that there is some content-restriction going on as buffering pauses have become common on youtube.

I'll bet that the 4G speed will diminish a bit when the network gets loaded up with more users.

Wow, everyone's is a whole lot better than my Verizon Mifi card. But I shouldn't complain since we're in the middle of nowhere :wink2:

I know... I figured I'd run another test now, since people should be heading to bed. Maybe not:

FWIW, the last one I showed *just* below the ISP average. This time, well below ISP average.

I agree with BillS. I checked my speed a month ago when a coworker was complaining about his slow connection. Cox got me download average of 45mbps and uploads around 16mpbs.

Okay, the 1:37 AM test: (Looks about 30% above ISP average this time)

Ya think my upload's throttled? LOL

Wow.. I sure hope we get switched over to the fiber line here at work soon:

Man, we got nothin' that'll do that here.

Did not realize the J-meister was not posting from home...

That's all very nice, but it doesn't approach the setup we had at UC Davis.

3x10Gb bundled links with a oc3 backup :)

Chris, Am I missing something here or is Fayetteville, suddenly waaaayyyy out in the suburbs. 450 miles???

That was running through our network at work. All of our traffic runs through the 'home office' which happens to be ~450 mi away from Atlanta. ;)

This is from home:

DFW airport, terminal E, gate 12, 4 bars of service. Did better at home with 2 bars!

Anybody have any guesses as to why Speednet thinks Wichita, Kansas is the location of my Verizon LTE service, regardless of where I connect from? Is it the IP range being allocated to my device, or is Tony pulling some trick from his tree-blocked garage?

Just pick your own site...mine always picks a crappy endpoint, so I go looking for one that actually gives me some speed!

Tonight's test from a minute ago.

That's from my laptop connected to the wireless network. Not the fastest computer and the wireless link might be an issue.

And a few minutes later from a machine on the LAN. Not much difference.
