In general, leather is best. View the textile gear as sacrificial - it will protect you once and then will need to be replaced. But it will do its job that one serious time.

If you find yourself doing a lot of serious riding, you will eventually want leather. The only reason I don’t wear it all the time is the Florida heat.

Speaking of which, insurance bought me new pants and bought the wife new pants, new jacket, and a new helmet when we crashed the GTL last year. Still cheap at twice the price.

I was driving home today from the DMV, having just got my motorcycle endorsement. Thinking about riding the motorcycle through even that little bit of traffic made me apprehensive. I think it will be the back country roads for a while.

That’s wise.

You will find your situation awareness improves immensely and it will carry over to driving a car as well.
 
I've lost track of how many motorcycles I've owned over the years, but it has been a lot of them. There has been no point since I was age 12 that I have not owned at least one bike. Here are the current two, the T140 had 271 miles on it when I got it a few years back. I just got back from riding the Guzzi out to Yellowstone and will hopefully get one more big trip in this fall.

First motorcycle ride I ever hd was bringing mine back on the Interstate. Apprehension. Yeah.
 
On the gear... SPEND THE MONEY. When I first started riding I wore a helmet just so I could say “yeah yeah I’m being safe I’m wearing a helmet.” I wore whatever as long as it was DOT and not expensive. When I got into grad school the dealer where I got my bike had a sale on Arai helmets. On a good discount these things were still $500 but talking to guys there about them convinced me to get one because of the investment I’m making in my head.

I had that helmet for a month before I was riding behind a semi truck when it had a trailer tire blow out. I was able to dodge most of the debris but one of the last bits of the tire to come off the wheel was about the size of a softball and it nailed me squarely in the face. I saw stars and the next thing I remember was being beside the truck kind of leaning over my tank, and I could see that I was now doing 80. The helmet had a rubber smudge in the center of the visor. I called the dealer and asked if it was likely compromised from the impact and they said no it’s fine, but aren’t you glad you had it?

Ended up being a great four day weekend, lots of great roads.
  • 60 from ducktown to Suches twice
  • 60 from Suches down to 19, twice
  • 129 over the mountain, twice
  • Wolfpen Gap, twice
  • Richard Russell, four times
  • Burton Dam/Seed Lake/Lake Raybun, twice
  • 197 up the west side of Lake Burtion, twice
  • War Woman
  • 28, twice
  • 130/281 from Salem, SC to Tuckasegee, NC
  • Ellijay road in NC
  • Walnut/Pine creek roads, NC
  • North Norton Road, NC
Good times! And, we stayed at a nice VRBO right on Lake Keowee, so right into the lake after a hot day of riding!

Devils Triangle, yup, several times, but I ride a modified version.
  • 116 up from Petros, but then take New River/Stoney Fork/Norma roads (all dirt) up to 297
  • 297 over to Old 63 (old rough pavement) and down to Caryville
  • Then take Mountain/Tower/Stoney Fork roads (paved goatpaths) back over to the dirt portion of Stoney Fork
  • Then back on to twisty 116 and then 330 to complete the loop
It's a ride more fitting of an adventure bike!

NICE!! You just named most of my favorite roads, leaving out only the Cherohala.
 
Took the Concours to Pacific Raceways back in 2008 for one of the "advanced" courses put on there a couple of times a year. It was a fun class, only occasionally spoiled by a couple of butt-heads.

This was my last motorcycle. Out of all the bikes I've owned, I probably put the most miles on this one. But, I got to the point that commuting by motorcycle in Seattle area traffic was more of a hassle than a joy. And, going out on the weekends to "ride" was taking time and money away from flying. So, I sold the bike and put the money towards a set of wings for the RV-8.

I'm new to GoPros (bought a Hero 8 in July), and very new to video editing, just downloaded Luma Fusion for iPad two weeks ago. That said, I just produced my first real youtube vid (as opposed to just uploading raw vid), a riding weekend with friends a month or so ago. It's a little long, I need to be more ruthless in axing video. As I'm new at this, I'm open to comments and critique, and of course likes and subscribes are cool too!

I enjoyed my Great Lakes / Flat States tour a few years ago, but if I lived where everything was flat I probably wouldn't own a bike. And yes, all of the locational moves I've made in my career have revolved around not only career opportunities but good riding locals as well.
 
We took delivery of Karen’s Ryker on the 13th.

It’s a fun ride. No shifting is strange, as is no front brake. Karen’s been practicing on the runway and our private road. Tennessee is weird in there’s no “learners permit”, so how is one supposed to practice for the test? Anyway, she’s taking a 2-day course this weekend which will qualify her for her license, and is really looking forward to riding the local twisties!

Eddie, it looks nice! I've ridden those before, and the biggest thing I have to do is reprogram as the three wheelers steer vs the two wheelers countersteer.
 
I was only able to get the F4 to 157. I was tucked all the way down with the helmet on the gas tank and on brand new asphalt. Now I don't even want to go over 70. (Vulcan)
 
In 1981 my 1972 Harley Davidson Sportster (pictured) was clocked by Sothern California Timing Association at the Bonneville Salt Flats at 177.6 miles per hour setting a record in the APS G 1300 class.

In 1985 my 1972 Harley Davidson Sportster was clocked by the Sothern California Timing Association at 201 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats and set a record of 199.954 in the AA F 1300 class. She did not have a fairing making hanging on a challenge.

In 1994 I crashed my 1989 Harley Davidson Sportster at Bonneville after going through the lights at 287 miles per hour and at my neurologist’s suggestion took up flying.

I have not ridden much since I earned my pilots certificate.

A gyroplane has become my motorcycle in the sky.

You all have me far beat on speed with motorcycles. Like @EdFred I don't particularly care to go all that fast anymore on a bike, I'd rather just enjoy the ride.

I'm slow now, and it's not about abject speed anyway, its about the corners. And when it comes to corners, I like the tighter lower speed stuff as well.
