LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Bill Gates set a conference abuzz when he opened a jar of mosquitoes onstage to make a point about malaria prevention.

"There's no reason only poor people should have the experience," the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft said at the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference Wednesday in Long Beach.

Audience members including technology leaders laughed nervously as the insects swarmed across the auditorium. Gates assured them that the bugs were not carrying malaria.

Hey, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation made a $100 Million challenge grant to Rotary International, to help Rotary get across the finish line with its "Polio Plus" campaign, which WILL eradicate polio from the face of the planet.

Rotary has spent nearly a billion-with-a-B dollars to end polio, and it's gonna happen. Hat's off to Gates for a cool hundred-mil of it.

No doubt about his philanthropic efforts, Spike! What he and Melinda are doing in Africa for farming and water availability is amazing.

Releasing mosquitos into a closed room just struck me as ...

. I wonder if the audience knew he was going to do that in advance... it doesn't sound like it!

Boy, I hope they get the bugs worked out of that conference! :goofy:

....I'll be here all week folks, don't forget to tip your waitress.....

..which WILL eradicate polio from the face of the planet.

I surely hope no genius saves a few test tubes of the polio virus like what happened with smallpox. Let's get rid of this stuff forever!
