My brother is looking for sailors to fill some crew positions they have open - any ideas on where to post this?

He writes "I am looking for sailers with a Merchant Mariners Document with a QMED endorsement or a Merchant Mariners Engineering Officers license of at least a DDE 4000 or better. I have two positions available. One in Port Angeles, WA and one in Astoria, OR.

I am also looking for a AB (Able-body Seaman) (endorsement on the Merchant Mariners Document) for the ship in Port Angeles, WA..."

I can provide contact info if anyone's interested.

I did that in a past life. One very good place to post an open position is at the Maritime Academy in Vallejo, CA.

Ilwaco or Astoria or Portland would be good too.

He needs someone qualified, not educated. The academies don't turn out work boat guys, they turn out ship guys. He's looking for someone with a DDE4000, and that's a workboat powerplant. You graduate the academies with a 2nd Engineers Unlimited ticket and no real world qualification really. I used to get academy grads and even summer interns, and they were all useless as tits on a boar when it came to workboats and tugs, took at least 6 months to get them up to speed and they'd usually be gone as soon as they found out how much work it was.

To answer Gregs question, personnally, I'd go see about getting guys through SIU (Seafarers' International Union). SIU was the only union I worked through that was worth a crap, and they were actually a pretty good deal for both sides, one of their big points being the campus at Piney Point where mariners get educated.

If he doesn't want union, it gets more difficult, but locally, I get hold of Sandra Waller swaller@deltamarine.com and see if she's got someone, and she has a pretty major mailing list.

Point taken, Henning. I don't disagree. That's why I suggested those working port towns. I don't know about these days but it used to be you could find your crew in those places.

Ideally, he needs to hire qualified, experienced, mature, dedicated professional sailors.

Sadly, the situation has gotten to the point where he would be happy with "has the ticket, can fog a mirror, and can stay out of jail long enough to at least be on board at sailing time."

Thanks for the thoughts - I'll pass it on!

That last requirement could be tough. On my ship in the Navy, a full 3/4 of the enlisted personnel E-3 and below came directly from the Brig.

If he's looking for Masters (1600/3000 ton ocean, also with Master of Towing and 500/1600 ton sail endorsements) have him give me a shout.
