I am obviously biased, but I think he was the best coach OU ever had, and certainly one of the best college coaches ever. He ran a pretty clean program, and while he didn't win a few of the National Championship games, the Sooners were almost always in the hunt. Going to make that first game in Columbus that much harder this year.

Was there some reason behind it? Kinda sudden isn't it? Have anything to do with Mixon?

Well, the Mixon thing was 3 years ago, so I seriously doubt it. He has two sons who play ball, and he has mentioned in the past that he wanted to watch them play if they made it to the next level. I think one is going to be playing for Northwestern, and Stoops recently purchased an estate in the Chicago area. I'm sure it's difficult "feeding the monster" for 18 years, so he may have decided to hang it up for a bit while his boys play. I wouldn't be surprised to see him come back to coaching again in some capacity. Supposedly he will remain with OU in some form, probably for consulting/recruiting stuff.

Some were speculating about a possible huge sanction of some sort coming down, but I think that would have leaked quite a while ago if that were the case. I think he was just waiting to make sure they got past NSD so that recruits wouldn't bail. I can't imagine Lincoln Riley agreeing to coach a program that was getting ready to have the NCAA come down on them.

Since I like to stir the pot, does this mean that Texas stands a chance to beat the Sooners going forward? :D

Eh, I wouldn't count on it for this year, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Texas finally stop being a dumpster fire next year. They have some talent, but just couldn't get them to play as a team, new coach might fix that issue.

The Mixon incident was 3 years ago, the Mixon crap hit the fan last year and Stoops took a huge reputation hit for it. NSD is in February, regardless of what he said, this is not "perfect timing". I read his statement and at no point did he say he would stay with OU is "some capacity", he said he would be "available" if they needed him. I certainly don't know his reasons, but I would bet a dollar that it is more than has been said.

I don't disagree that the Mixon ordeal marred his reputation, I'm just saying I don't think it was the cause of his retirement decision. NSD was in February, then they had the Spring game and such to get through. I don't know that it's "perfect timing", but I don't think it's bad timing as far as the team is concerned. As long as Lincoln Riley doesn't make any rash decisions, they've got some talent to carry them a good distance this year. There's always things left unsaid with these situations, but I certainly wouldn't fault him for just about any reason you could come up with after a pretty successful 18-yr run at one of the nations top football programs.

Good news is, even when Texas has sucked, they've had a "chance," and perhaps won a few that OU should have had in the bag. That said, I am hoping Tom Herman's influence will be good for Texas (but I thought Coach Strong would be the answer, and wish he had been; I wish the best for him).

---

I am surely not betting against OU - Coach Riley will do just fine.
