I closed on a house on the Erie, CO airpark July 31, 2024. The remodel started then and is still ongoing. I have not lived there since I bought it. I do have a contractor taking care of the remodel. There's no stove, no one is showering, and the furnace has barely run.
My first gas bill from Xcel Energy was for $84. The second was about 3 times that. After the second bill, I talked to a supervisor and convinced her I needed a new meter, and it took a month for that to be installed. In that month, I was billed for another $145 for gas.
I got some credit, but my net gas bill is still $75/month.
The supervisor says the meter will calibrate itself and I will get a refund for the excess payment I've made for the last three months. Barring time travel, which not even Sheldon Cooper was able to invent, I don't see how I'm going to get refunded for the overcharge.
I have a call into the Colorado Public Utilities Commission complaining about the excessive charges, but I'm not holding my breath. Apparently, the city of Erie, CO has no involvement with XCel Energy.
At least this new meter seems to be accurate, and I don't have a gas leak between the house and the meter.
To rub salt into the wound, I paid the electric bill over the phone and the clerk transcribed the numbers wrong, so my payment was returned, and I got dinged another $15 for their mistake.
Needless to say, I am not a happy camper!
