Woke up this morning to find my mailbox about half full of human feces and it smeared all over it and the post.

What kind of scumbags do this kind of thing? It is not like my house is the first one in the subdivision or something. I am fairly sure it was done to "us" intentionally.

Was so disgusting, just took and put a garbage bag around the entire thing and took a hammer to it. Will buy a new mailbox tomorrow.

Going to borrow a friends "game camera" that snaps a picture when it detects movement and put it in a bush so hopefully they WILL comeback and I can get a shot of them.

Just had to rant some.

Probably the same kind of idiot that plays mailbox-baseball. Or the ones that fill a paper bag full of animal feces, set it on fire on your front porch, and ring your doorbell.

Did you report it to the police? That's just wrong on so many levels. I think you handled it right (garbage bag and a hammer). I hope you catch them with the camera and put it on YouTube to embarrass them. Isn't it a felony to mess with a postal mailbox?

Yes to the Post Office and the local police.
It is actually a Federal offense to mess with a mail box, it is considered Gov't property by the Postal Service.

This really stinks, no pun intended. There are plenty of people who have no respect for themselves so they also have no respect for anyone else.

Will the PO then replace their mailbox? Or do they expect you to buy the government a new one?

Don't know, but on the Postal Inspectors website that is what it says!

Sounds like an unfunded government mandate!

We just had to replace our mailbox last months when someone hit it. He have our suspicions about who, but,,,

We didn't bother reporting it. Cost us about $300, including installation! (We're in a P.U.D., and there's only one model approved.)

You buy the mailbox, maintain it, replace it. It's government property. What about that do you fail to understand?

It is a federal offense to mess with one just like it's federal offense to mess with a plane. Somehow I don't think the FBI will roll and do a DNA test unless you suspect the attacker wuz a terrist.

Still, call the postal inspector and file a complaint.

I think Grant has it right, 'unfunded mandate' ;)

It's been this way since I was wee lad, prolly since Ben Franklin. I only know because my uncle worked for the post office and he yelled at me when I put a sticker out of Mad magazine on our mailbox:
"Dear postman, no one named "Occupant" lives here!..."

Little mf'ers - I'd love to string up kids like that.

We had a couple egging and turfing incidents the past two summers. I was ready to put spike strips on the lawn. We ended up landscaping with big boulders; no more turfing. Turns out a local HS principal lives across the street. I think we were victims of mistaken identity. Doesn't make me any less willing to shove them down the septic tank!!!

Don't want to hijack the thread but on this topic...

Last Saturday, a local who is running for judge walked down my street and stuck his campaign flyers in everyone's mailbox. I was out in the driveway washing vehicles at the time.

"Hmmm"...I thought to myself..."I thought it was illegal for anyone besides the USPS to put a parcel in a mailbox". So I looked it up...and yes it is.

So, is this man:

1. Ignorant of the law?

or

2. Knowledgeable of the law and simply decides to put himself above it.

Either way, I don't want him to be the man in charge of interpreting the law and applying justice in my county.

You just lost my vote Judge Lawson.

Besides...you're a politician...you're supposed to be out stuffing BALLOT boxes not MAIL boxes.

Okay, I'll admit...I find humor in wierd places...:goofy:

Oh, by the way, he lost in the primary last Tuesday. Darn.

Make sure you turn the flash off or you will be missing a camera.

A neighbor of mine (very resourceful fellow) got weary of having his yard trenched by frisky youths - have no idea why he was targeted - so he welded up a very nice "spike strip" out of rebar, legs that went down about foot into the yard, and sharpened spikes pointing up.

Only *one* more trenching incident, and confirmation from a nearby service station of an SUV with two flat tires...

Uh just curious Mark how did you know it was human feces? put a hiden video cam out there to get them.

You sound quite familiar with all that:rolleyes:

There was also sitting on the car door and "bowling for trash cans" with trash bags at 50mph....

Live in the country and you learn a lot.. :D Neighbor of mine had a couple of his mailboxes taken out by kids playing with baseball bats - so he took his welder and made an inside frame of 3/4" rebar, which was then welded to the post. A few nights later there was a shattered bat near the mailbox... and he learned later that a lesson was "taught". The kid didn't quite end up in the hospital, but was in pain for a couple of weeks...

When I was driving through Wisconsin to Janesville I spotted one that a farmer had put out where he had massive concrete posts hidden behind a wood front on the side facing away from traffic. I gotta guess he scored a few little snowflakes like that. :D

Any chance that rig could be to prevent the snowplow throwoff from taking out the mailbox? That's a problem in many rural locations.

-Skip

(not making excuses for the kids... just curious)

Mark is livin in the Miz-o-rah part of Missouri.

A agree with the steel post strategy. We had that problem in rural Maine some years back. Nothing that a little 4/06 steel couldn't stop. The kid ended up at the hospital, the fractured bat was a metal one.
