I got one for the kids for Christmas and holy crap is that thing "real".
I showed it to my dad so he got one and last night he and I "Went golfing together" We were in our respective houses but could see one another and could talk.

I don't do video games. I am at a weird age where I sort of missed the window where they got popular but this thing is incredible. I got a little motion sick on a roller coaster but other than that it is amazing.

I see they have a flight sim and I got one game where you strap rockets to your hands and you can fly around the city. Feels exactly like when I fly in my dreams.

When it is my time to be really old and sit in a chair unable to be mobile, I am going to have one of these strapped to my face and play "Vacation Simulator"

Oh well, I am going to get the flight sim they have and see how that goes but if you have the chance to try one on, you might be surprised at how well it tricks your brain.

Even though my feet are physically on the ground, when you fall in the oculus, as the ground comes rushing up at you it as quite scary the first couple times. Even now, I can feel it in my stomach when I am about to hit the ground.

Its wild. The flight sim is a little bit cartoon but if they could get something like MS flight sim on there it would be an incredible experience.

There are a ton of great games. X-Plane is cool but the flight controls are clunky

The have recently released the update for MSFS2020. I'm using a different headset, but same basic thing. It's incredible. Takes a beast of a computer to run, but it's really pretty awesome.

Guess we've come a long way since tennis on the Wi. I was pretty sore from that one.
 
So you wear glasses and have a strong prescription? Can it work for those people? Asking for a friend.
 
I would trade the plank game for a skydiving game. I miss that sport.
 
I was interested enough to go check prices on Amazon. Way down in the verbiage on the page it says "facebook account required". Anyone know why that would be? I don't participate in facebook.

Unrelated question I know I could go research the answer to, but I'm sure someone knows... Can you use these with input from two computers? We're currently running two on XPlane...one for the front view and hardware, and the second for the left wing view.

I know there are XP and other forums, but I'm already here and this group knows most everything I care about.

OK, that's pretty freaky.

I am mortified of heights. Reckon that, in 3D, would mess with my head pretty well.

If that could be coupled to a reasonably decent sim, it would be an amazing training aid.

Facebook owns it from what I understand.
 
Been loving mine since Christmas. It truly is immersive. Plus with a little bit of skill you can easily connect it to a gaming PC and run "traditional" VR games that are too much for the Quest to handle itself. Quest LInk (with a cable) works great, wireless link (Wifi only) works nearly as well, making it super easy to play full PCVR games.
 
I've not had my hands on an Oculus Quest...but many years ago I got to work a fair bit in the VR CAVE developed at the U. of Illinois. This was a walk-in, immersive VR room, usually with 3 or 4 surfaces being rear-projection screens, though at least one six-screen room was built. They were huge, expensive, and absolutely incredible to work with. A commercial example is here: https://www.mechdyne.com/av-vr-solutions/solutions/virtual-augmented-reality/cave/. Since working with those in the early 1990's, I'd not seen anything in the consumer space that came close to replicating the experience...but I have the impression that Oculus and one of two others have finally caught up.

Aviation content: FMC made aircraft loading equipment, and they had a CAVE simulator that allowed them to roll into the CAVE a pallet with the physical controls of a jetway or galley loading scissors lift, then surround it with the virtual airport environment including the aircraft. Users could practice docking the jetway or scissors lift to the aircraft (it involved aligning a laser or two with targets on the aircraft) without risk of actually damaging the aircraft. I got to play with that one, and a CAT bucket loader simulator, also with the physical controls, but my own work was with docking virtual molecules into virtual enzymes. But yes, they also had a 'plank' simulator much like the one in in the first linked video. It was terrifying.

They do own it now. I think it happened early last year as they were prodding me to sign up with Facebook, but I also have no Facebook account, and care not to ever have one. They are giving something like a 2 year grace period to keep using your current Oculus account. After that, we'll see what happens I guess.
A new user account probably has no choice when signing up.
Oculus did and likely always will have a social component to it. You can ignore/disable a lot of it if you choose.

PokerstarsVR can be a blast with the right people. You can host rooms/tables and invite only those you want. Super easy.
You can also set up some tournaments I believe.

I've often wondered if there were any poker players amongst the PoA ranks. Could be a fun online thing, or even an in person weekend fly-in event.

Facebook bought them in 2014..
And you cannot use the new headset (Quest 2) with just an Oculus account. Facebook account required
 
I remember when pinball games were a great source of entertainment....

Does this have to go along with an Xbox/PlayStation or is it stand-alone? My mom would love flying like in dreams.
 
No Facebook account for me, thanks! Guess we'll just have to muddle thru :)
 
I have one. Yeah that roller coaster is not great.

I heard the adult VR offerings are pretty amazing. I'd hate to be caught with one of those on my head and....well....
 
I have the Oculus Rift. It connects to my PC, so not the same as the quest, which is wireless.

For the Rift, xplane in VR with orthophotos is pretty fun. not for training, but fun.

I had some time to kill over Christmas since I was on leave with nowhere to go. two VR games helped pass the time - Start Wars Squadrons - holy crap. You get to fly an xwing, tie fighter and some of the other ships from the star wars movies. Incredible.

Job simulator - It sounds dumb and it is dumb. But it entertained my 10 year old and I for hours on end.

Not pong, but yes... Space Invaders, pinball, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Centipede, Burger Time... good times.... Then later in the 80's there was Afterburner...I dropped a bunch of money into that one.

The Oculus Quest is a standalone headset. It requires a phone to run the Oculus app on, which is used to manage some aspects of the device. Other than that, everything is done in the headset, no cables to any external device required.

If you have a reasonably powerful gaming PC, you can connect it to your PC with a long USB-C cable and use it as a PC VR headset as well.
 
My VR Library (that I recommend):

Beat Saber:
The quintessential classic VR game.

Bigscreen:
Buy a movie ticket with cash, watch real movies in a virtual theater in VR, including in 3D.

Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, Hand Grenades:
A fun gun and melee weapon based sandbox style game.

IronWolf VR:
A neat multi-crew arcade style submarine game.

Job Simulator:
Fun game to tool around in, jokes and references everywhere.

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes:
Excellent Party Game, 1 person sees a bomb in VR and has to defuse it, everyone not in VR downloads a manual and attempts to help the VR player defuse the bomb.

Pavlov VR:
Literally Counter-Strike in VR with multiplayer with recently added WW2 weapons multicrew tanks. Easy to get disoriented at first while moving but after some practice it becomes second nature.

Space Pirate Trainer:
Arcade shooter with matrix dodging.

Tilt Brush:
Like MS Paint in 3D with some really neat effects. Fun to decompress in.

VTOL VR:
Hands down my favorite VR game. Just the right mix of realistic and arcade cockpit controls, has a 3rd party multiplayer mod, and no joystick needed. The switches and stick are virtual so you physically reach out to flip switches and move the throttle and the stick.

Also a cool title:

I Expect You To Die
A spy puzzle solving game. Break into a lab, fix a submarine escape pod etc.

It only takes about 3 hours to finish the game, but it's worth it if other people in your household can also play it.

It's actually a game you can play while seated.
