I was listening to a financial guy on the radio. He mentioned something about checking your rates on homeowners insurance.
I forget the details but he mentioned that they tend to out climb the going intro rates.

Sure enough I was paying $2100 for insurance.
I called them and said "cut me a deal bruh." They said they would knock it down to $1800.

I called a competitor and they said they would give me the same coverage for $1200
Done.

Any other things folks have done where they had been able to recover wasted spending?
I find as I (and especially my kids) get older, I grow much less happy parting with money.

PMI. Stupid stupid stupid me thought it pays your mortgage in case of your death. It doesn't.

Just re-appraise your house and get rid of it. It pays for the appraisal in 2 months.

Dave Ramsey life bruh

$600 on our house insurance. Same for both my cars (together). Now the airplane cost ... let's not discuss it ... I'm having a good day so far. ;)

Yea it's not post mortem insurance. That's what life insurance is for.

Like Smokey says, shop around. So far Costco has worked for my homeowners policy.

Use Green Stamps. :)

Live off-grid.

That won't work very well. The grid is actually much more efficient at providing utilities than most people will be with current tech. Payback is 20 years or so.

Getting back to 6PC's original insurance thing...

Not sure if all insurance companies do this, but when I head out to work (out of the country), USAA allows me to "store" my cars. Basically, I'm telling them that I won't be driving them and they're in a safe place. And USAA knocks a huge chunk off of my insurance.

If you have a vehicle that you only drive seasonally, it might be something to look at.

Biggest ways we save money:

- no cable
- buy used vehicles
- do everything we can ourselves

Funny you should post SR and the Miracles. A good friend of mine (Sydney Justin) is the lead singer for that group now. I just had dinner with him and his wife a couple weeks ago.

Unfortunately the local electric co-op charges 50 bucks a month just for the privilege of being connected to the service that may or may not work all the time. With the technology for off grid systems increasing almost constantly, going off grid is looking good to me. Plus with all the sun shine we get here plus the wind at night, having at the very least a grid tie system makes sense.

I am not looking to be cheap, I am just not wanting to depend on a service that may or may not be working.

It's funny(?) how we have changed so much over the years on what we will consider to be "essential". Internet service, data plans, cell phones in general, most of us have cable, and it seems to be normal.

If you have an electron lasting more than four hou.... nm

With the hurricane coming, I've been stockpiling electrons. They'll be worth a lot after the zombie apocalypse, too, and maybe if Bernie becomes president.

We have directv and every year I call them and tell them to give me a better rate or I'm going to dish and getting the new customer package. They usually give me at least 40 bucks off a month for a year and give me NFL Sunday ticket. Every year I do this otherwise I will go to dish makes no difference to me.

Are you a gambling man? Get rid of all your insurance that isn't required by law. I did that for years, it paid off. Yeah, it was stupid, but I was lucky and won.

I'm not enough of a business person to make carrying debt be a net positive, so being debt free is a huge savings (no interest).

If your salary is portable, take it to a city with a lower cost of living. I just illustrated this in reverse. I'm temporarily in a city where I'm paying $800 / yr. For parking. Rent went up 50% for 40% less space. etc. Your salary might go down a little in absolute terms, but IMHO, it'll be more than made up for in savings in other areas.

No cable.

Don't upgrade cell phone every two years.

Have an emergency fund. This does a couple of things... first, you don't go into debt fixing a problem, second you can fix the problem NOW, before it becomes a bigger problem.

Have good credit. This lowers your insurance, supposedly.

Speaking of hurricane, help yourself to some of these
