You know, all those USB ports and photo-card readers?

I popped in my SD card this morning and when I went to the "computer" the only folders showing were:

OS (C):
Recovery (D):
DVD RW Drive (E) :

Whereas usually it gives me several various drive options - all the USB ports had their own letter after them.

So I rebooted, and before I popped the card in it seemed that they came back (I only glanced, didn't take stock of each one, but it was definitely more than 3 drives...)

I popped the SD card back in and when I looked at the monitor - gone - back to the above.

I rebooted again and NADA. They are not there.

This is a brand new computer - I just bought the dang thing last fall (?)

Sounds like you have one of those fancy multi card readers (the ones that read almost any type of card reader).

I just got home after a long night, so if I misread, my apologies:

Try moving the USB cable to another USB port. If it still doesn't work, try it on another computer.

My moneys on a faulty device, not computer.

that was immediately obvious. ;-)

Hi

I hope you are right - I turned it off for a while. What is bothering me is that when there is nothing at all in the drives, you can still see all of them - their drive/letters. Now, nothing is showing. I'll check in a bit.

I also leave the computer on all the time - is that bad? Should I turn it off every night?

It is not bad. But I have noticed that sometimes windows just needs to be reset.

Thanks for the help guys.

ps. The computer has several readers for different cards, but it also has something like 4 USB ports. The SD card has its own slot and I just pop it in. Usually, all the USB ports and readers show as a different drive-letter when I pull up "computer."

Now, the only thing showing is what I wrote above.

OK, the computer is on - the USB drives are showing up again, hooray. And with my SLR card, they work. I can't remember now if each card reader (the little ones, for the SD and so on) used to show up as well, or not. But at least these are back.

If the SD card was somehow corrupted (and it did take photos this morning, so it should be OK?) would it have caused those other drives to "disappear" from view when I insert it?

Next time you pop the SD card into the camera, before you take any photos, use your camera's menu to select the card and re-format it. If there is any latent data on the card, it should get wiped clean.

I had something similar happen at work where a USB drive I used didn't show up as a drive letter, but the system recognized a drive was installed. The compouter didn't map the drives to letters.

I'm sorry- I forget the steps I used to remap the drive but perhaps someone with a better memory can help...
