I had posted in the christmas parties thread some of the projects my students have accomplished(go check them out, page three) but two of my sophomores have a talent for aluminum. They're project was to make me the seat back for my Acroduster Too project. They spent three days working on this! They built a paper mock-up, then an aluminum trial fit-up piece that they then used to make the final piece that they spend many hours "jeweling" , after that they rolled it into shape and then they bead rolled it. it came out fantastic! I am so happy.

Forgot to mention it was made from .032 2024 aluminum. I had a half sheet laying around waiting for this project.

Taxpayers picking up the labor, hmmmmmm? ;):D
actually, most of their money comes from private scholarships believe it or not. The trades are huge right now and the demand is unreal for skilled labor, we have some fantastic partners involved with our program who hand out scholarships like candy! It is really a blessing for some of my students to be able to get an education without having the burden of massive amounts of student loans. I actually have q good proportion of my cohort is Canadian believe it or not. They are mostly here on sports scholarships for rodeo, baseball, basketball or lesbian dance theory

Just breaking them balls on ya! ;)

What I meant was working on your personal plane.

...lesbian dance theory...

When I was younger, I studied that. I could not find any to do a practical study.

Any connections to the MikeRoweWorks foundation at your school? Guy seems to be doing good things for the trades.

Nice to see students applying themselves to build something useful! High school or undergrads?

Looks like they do nice welding too. ;) :D

Seriously, is that nice work going to get covered up by seat upholstery, or does a parachute pack serve that function in an Acro?

The plans call for a piece of heavy fabric that is laced in place. The idea is that you are wearing a seat pack that is the padding.

The welding is all mine, oxy-acetylene with a smith airline torch.

What was the question ? I thought it was a you being a smart arse.
IOWs you don't know what "What's the difference " was a question. Tax payer money training mechanics no matter what route thru the system makes mechanics.

I think you need to put on your sarcasm viewing glasses! We are all just having a good time and giving each other a few jabs. I understand what you are saying and That is fine.

He doesn't have a pair of those glasses. He does claim to use sarcasm in retreat often though.

So how far along are you with the Acro2. Wings? This is one of those legendary scratch build from plans projects, isn't it?

Fuse is on gear, all the controls are done, tank installed, turtledeck about to be finished, tlil group is done. I have most of the wing ribs done, the spars are ready. I am now at the point that it is a whole bunch of little do dads to do.
I had a website that was showing the build but took it down to build a better webpage and haven't gotten around to it yet. I have somewhere around 7000+ photos of the build and am just short of 600 hours into it.

Kickass welding skills is something that I really wish I had. Unfortunately it was my worse subject in A&P school but then again we did not do as much hands on as I would have liked to. I have frequently thought about taking a welding class or two since then.

Come on up and I will make you a welding phenom! I have been trying to throw together a summer welding program for aircraft welding. I am a certified welding instructor with an endorsement of AWS D.17.1- fusion welding for aerospace.

Certainly is tempting.

Practice, practice, practice... that's what it takes. I got pretty darned good at pushing a puddle... welding was a whole quarter where I went to school and one of the most enjoyable classes.
