...and his Slacker Fiancee:

He arrived from Australia, all full-up with attitude, fresh out of high school. Did not even want to wear shoes or shirt to restaurants. Fired from a couple of jobs, but then (about the time my wife was ready to kill him), he went off to the University of Texas, from where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, honors liberal arts degree (Plan II, for those of you who might know what that means). Best of all, while there, he met Kacy.

"Kacy" - sounds fluffy and bubble-headed. She ain't; indeed, she may be the single smartest person I'll ever know, with an acid wit and teensy and fiery. They get along pretty well.

He got into NYU Law, from where he graduates in May, Most Very Excellent grades.

She found out, today, that she has been accepted to the UT Southwestern Medical School, here in Dallas.

What a pair these two are... and will be. They marry soon. Stuff - good stuff- will happen wherever they go.

I am So Very Proud!

Chris always used to say, "Uncle Spike, when I am rich and famous, I'm buying you a jet."

I remind him of this from time to time...

I've got a nephew like that. Born in South America, moved here when he was 12. Gang member. Got his girlfriend pregnant when she was 15. Dropped out of high school but got a GED, flunked all his classes as the community college.

I don't know what happened.

Went back to community college, transferred to Clark University. Was accepted to Suffolk Law at night, transferred to the day program, passed the bar, and is working as an Assistant District Attorney.

"Good on ya, mate!" ;)

You could tell he was headed for trouble when he went to UT. Sorry about that.

My slacker nephew still lives at home with my sister. He's 27.

I lived at home until I was 26, but I was paying a reasonable R&B, and then I bought my house.

Yabut, you're a slacking underachiever.

He doesn't pay reasonable R&B, his parents hate him being there, all he does is smoke marijuana in his room, which is a smoke infested sty. I've been telling my big sis to give him the boot for years.

I suspect houses around here cost just a wee bit more than around you...

I don't know where "here" is, but Omaha isn't necessarily the land of cheap housing. I have been asked to move there 4 or 5 times now from Atlanta, and investigated that.

I suspect salaries are just a wee bit higher then around here.

Jesse has that right.
And anybody who buys a house at 21 deserves credit for good sense and hard work.

starting salaries? as a percentage of housing costs? don't bet on it.

(note: back in the dark ages when I bought my house there wasn't the 0% down no income needed financing insanity we've had recently).
I've had the option to move to areas where I couldn't obtain the quality of life I wanted with the salary I was offered. I didn't do it. I'll move anywhere if it makes sense...but it has to make sense.

I wasn't born in Nebraska. I came to Nebraska because the quality of living I could achieve with the salary I could obtain made sense to me.

Anyways. This isn't what the thread is about. Congrats to your nephew Spike. You did right.

well slacking runs in my drunken shanty irish family as well... My great grandfather couldn't get the family admitted to the USA - so he went to Canada, waited till the ice froze on Lake Huron and they walked across...

my slacker grandaughter is 17 and graduating from high school in june... she is accepted to Purdue on a scholarship with mixed freshman/ sophomore staus starting in August (lacks 4 credits for full sophomore status) with intentions to complete the premed course in 3 years and go to vet school...
when I jumped her slacker butt about the missing 4 credit hours she admitted she did waste time sleeping for 3 or 4 hours a couple of nights a night... I dunno, they just don't make drop dead gorgeous red headed irish girls with pug noses freckles and a playboy bunny body, like they used to...

BTW, we are not worried about her going to the university while she is a still bit young yet - she has her second degree black belt and teaches martial arts at the local college at night...

denny-o

Spike, is that the same young man who used to be in your avatar years ago?

You mean, the one that Toby was mad at me because I wasn't him when I showed up at Gaston's? :D

Yep, that'd be the one. He's in a couple of these (as well as my Dad and other cool peeps).

Texas '96 BSEE

The joke for the Plan II folks is "I don't have a major, but I 'plan to' have one".

About Plan II.

Most of the smart ones in Plan II take an extra year and get a 2nd degree to back it up.

Good way of putting it. His second major is Spanish (with an Australian accent?), but of course, the law degree is his big ticket.. Kacy is also a Plan II grad, and she's a-gonna be physician.

Flunking out of Plan II was not my finest hour.

Yep, that one. :D

And y'know what, Diana? He ain't no uglier, now. :cornut:
