Nick, here's what I found out:

The public beta is indeed closed, and our "open registration" closed two weeks ago. We will open the gates again shortly after integrating some of the user feedback & with the mobile version.

So expect to hear from them soon... and then you can test the heck out of the new mobile version.
 
Ummm... you're either open for business or you're not...

They really shouldn't do that...

I've seen that kill otherwise useful websites.

The attention span of the Internet is about one nanosecond. If the Net gets the feeling that they're open in beta, open for real, closed to new users, open again...

They're dead.
