Need to replace failed HP 3055 home unit ("low Memory" all the time). The auto. document feed is critical (large batches to FAA).

HPs according to the comment boards really are el steenko for this.
Anybody have suggestions? NO to inkjets. MUST have a laser engine.
 
Dr. Bruce. I use a brother MFC-7840w in my home office. It is a black and white laser printer. It faxes. It scans in color to 1200x1200 optical. It works as a networked scanner and printer and fax. It can be plugged into a router, it has built in networking ability. Plus, the toner cartridges last a long time and are $30.

Best of all it was $200. Best printer mfc I have ever owned. You can still find these new but I'm sure there is an updated version of it. I looked at color a month ago and brother has a color laser version of this unit for $500 or so.

The fact that I say this is the best printer I have ever owned is high praise coming from me.

Ps. The scanner has never jammed.

You need a commercial grade machine to satisfy your desire. I would talk to Xerox first and shop from there. I will never buy an HP product again due to poor design and support issues and flat FU denials of warrantee.
 
I dunno if Bruce needs a commercial machine for what he does - he is not at the 5000 copy/print per month level -

Likely the main thing for Bruce is large batch faxing versus printing or duplication.

What did Nate wind up with recently?
 
What Tony wound up with...

Canon Color ImageClass MF8380Cdw.

So far only a few "complaints" and they're minor but one might affect Doc...

- On Mac, the special buttons for "Scan->PC1" and "Scan->PC2" Don't work because Canon hasn't made a program to sit on the Mac and respond to button presses from those. No big loss.

- When double-sided scanning (same thing as faxing for Doc) a largish Doc once that was somewhat wrinkled and would be hard for anything to feed, the double-sided feature couldn't flip the page properly without jamming. This is not the norm, but Karen was grumpy. Ha.

- If you leave the manual Scanning button pressed, it'll refuse to go back to sleep to conserve power later. Makes sense, it's sitting there waiting for the commands from the PC/Mac.

- It's kinda beefy. It got its own end-table in the Kitchen. ;)

Honestly, it's the closest I've seen to "commercial quality" in this low a price tag in a long time. Last printer I liked as much as this one was back in the HP LaserJet 2,3,4,5 days.

No fax line, so I can't comment on fax quality but I can't see it being any problem. Massive amount of fax features in the manual.

By the way, plan an hour to really read the manual. Not usually a problem for us pilot-types, but this thing would probably bother a "I don't read manuals" computer user. It's got a ton of stuff in it, and understanding it requires a little light reading. Difficult for many in our general population these days. :(
 
P.S. I *think* it has a RAM upgrade option if you're storing large faxes in memory for batch sends. It has some RAM so I'd try it first, but be ready to buy some old style RAM chips to toss in it, there's a door on the side and I'm guessing old-style RAM just going by the age of the design. May not need it.

Many levels of commercial grade equipment, but the sad fact is regardless how much you use it, if you need/want speed and reliability when you use it, I've found the best value in commercial gear.
 
Well, Henning, speed, reliability or price, pick any 2.
 
Please note the commercial quality duct tape roll sitting atop the stuff on the desk. Haha.

Bought that tape in Lincoln, NE at the Home Depot!
