Movies where the remake was better than the original. Not talking sequels. Nor spin-offs.
Offhand I can’t think of any. Except for maybe True Grit.

The Fly - maybe, haven't seen either version in a long time

True Grit was the first one that came to my mind. I liked both, but I liked the newer version better.

Offhand, I can't think of one. Both versions of True Grit were very good, but even there I liked the original better.

Maybe Ocean's 11. I really like the remake, but I don't think I've watched the original in its' entirety. Casino Royale was also very good, but the original was kind of a spoof, so I hesitate to call Daniel Craig's version a remake.

Those were my two initial thoughts as well. I really liked Casino Royale, but I saw it as a complete reboot of the franchise rather than simply a remake of a movie.

Flight of the Phoenix. And it's not even a question.

Also, Ghostbusters.

the True Grit remake better than the original? SMH

Maybe sacrilege, but I liked the remake of the The Magnificent Seven (2016) more than the original, even though I like me some Yul Brynner.

I prefer the original.

godzilla. Of course I won’t specify which versions of the million movies I’m talking about.

The Thing, 1982 > The Thing from Another World, 1951

Nauga,
like a carrot

My friend and I had a discussion about this but more in regards to music. Without much scientific study we felt that generally the version you listed to/saw first was going to be your preference.

Not a movie, but a series. House of Cards. The British version to me is unwatchable.

There are lots of movies made in the 30's that were later remade that were much better

Cool, don’t have to wrack my memory.
Cape Fear. 1962, 1991
The Italian Job. 1969, 2003
just thought of another one not on that list
The Postman Always Rings Twice.

Thats just the ones with same title.

I couldn’t make it through the new ghostbusters. Gag
I didn't even see it. I just put those out there to get the old men shaking their fist at clouds and because an unnamed mod said I should put GB down too.

I honestly think FotP was about equivalent. But I did see the remake before the original.

In general, I agree, but man, I love Shaggy's version of Angel, after having heard the original a bazillion times.

That makes sense.

Excellent nomination, while the special effects may be somewhat dated, the air of tension and paranoia are not. This is still one creepy film.

What about Invasion of the Body Snatchers?

I couldn’t make it through the new ghostbusters. Gag

Was that considered a "re-make" though? It wasn't a prequel/sequel, but wasn't it sort of just a continuation of the series? Sort of like the Bourne Legacy movie being it's own tangent to the Bourne trilogy.

Airplane. However, I've only watched clips of Zero Hour rather than the whole thing.

Also, Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings was better than Bakshi's.

Flight of the Phoenix. And it's not even a question.
Personal preference, I suppose. I like 'em both.
Also, Ghostbusters.
YHGTBSM. NFW. Any movie with McCarthy gets an automatic thumbs down in my book. I'll take the original, and if the remake is showing I'll go find something else to do.

The Omega Man was better Last Man on Earth. I never saw I Am Legend.
The Robert Preston/Julie Andrews Victor Victoria was better than the original if for no other reason than it was in English.
I kind of liked Always better than A Guy Named Joe.
The Judy Garland version of a Star Is Born is better than the Janet Gaynor one, I've not seen either the Lady Gaga or the Streisand version.

Rumor has it there's a "The Wild Bunch" remake in the works.

Nope - not gonna see it.

There's nothing that's going to beat the original.

90

Star Wars was a pretty good remake of The Hidden Fortress

3:10 to Yuma
Didn't even know it was a remake until a couple years ago

Airplane! Much much better than Zero Hour!

Cheers
