Touchdown! Greaser!
Last Friday I was able to live out a childhood dream - fly a DC-3 across the Rocky Mountains.
I had an opportunity to do my SIC Recurrent training in the Southern Cross C-49J at Broomfield and then we flew the plane to Steamboat Springs (SBS) for the Wild West Air Fest.
We did the crossing around 13,000 MSL and had to dodge some afternoon showers and even a lighting bolt about 10 miles ahead of us. There were some showers over SBS when we arrived and winds were 90 degrees to the runway gusting to 35 kts. We ended up circling for 15-20 minutes waiting for it clear up before we could get in.....needless to say, with my 5 hrs of total DC-3 time, I did not get to log the landing at SBS (which was perfectly fine with me
)
Southern Cross will be heading to CO Springs this week and will be giving rides 12-18 September so if anyone in the Front Range area wants to experience a ride, head on down. I think they are selling seats for 40 min flights for $79/person.
