What are some of the most ridiculous looking planes to you and why?

For me the 182RG has to rank up there. I almost die laughing every time I see that awkward spindly gear retraction thing happen.

A jet biplane, anyone?

"Airtruk" = Australian for "awkward":

I laugh every time I see a ctls or the like. They look like a flying sperm.

I think the Shorts, although a very capable airplane, looks a little funny.

A B-52 at full cruise, 340knts, low level, 200ft AGL and nose low. Wait, they don't go low level any more.

You haven't flown one. They are the nicest-flying Cessna I have ever flown, and have a large speed range. Vso is 37 knots. Very little back pressure needed in the steep turn.

And that "ridiculous" gear? I maintained that gear, too, and if it's looked after it's a nice, simple system, far better than the old 210s and many other airplanes. But some of those parts sure ain't cheap.

tri-pacer

Far better-looking it was as a taildragger, for sure. But as competition to the 172, which it was, it outflew the 172 every which way. Took off shorter, climbed faster, cruised faster, and carried more. I flew a friend's Tripe, tried to stall and spin it. It wouldn't stall. Added power. Still no stall. Full power, yoke all the way back, and it stuck its nose WAY up and kept climbing. I like airplanes that behave that well. Now I want one. Converted to taildragger (PA-20).

If you Google "ugly airplane" you'll find that there have been far too many incredibly hideous aircraft built throughout the history of aviation to possibly settle on just one.

Aerosport Scamp. All-metal, trike, T-tailed biplane. A flying oxymoron.

Ewww! I fly a CTLS, and sperm is hardly what comes to mind when I look at it. But I'll cut you a break, since you identify yourself as a 10th grader.:wink2: You might be surprised to hear this, but often while I'm preflighting, other pilots and even non-pilot bystanders will come up to ask me about the plane, telling me how cute they think it is. If you're looking to meet people (and I'm not), it's kind of like the airplane equivalent of walking a cute dog.:D

I walk my cute little dogs all the time and I ain't met nobody.

(not that I'm in the market to do so, just saying')

Really? I find that hard to believe! Dogs are such a magnet for conversation. I would say that maybe I just live in an overly friendly place, but that's definitely not true, judging from the neighbors who turn their heads rather than wave at us!:rolleyes2:

Hahaha I do agree it attracts attention. There are a few at the airport I fly out of and they always get people talking when they go by. I have flown one and think its a good plane but the design doesn't do much for me.

As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm glad you've at least experienced the joys of flight in it.:) It's a fun plane to fly.

That looks awkward, yes?

Looks like the front end of a Lysander mated with the tail of a Lancaster. Only the British... :D

Remember the rules for aircraft identification.

If it's weird, it's British.

If it's ugly, it's French.

If it's weird and ugly, it's Russian.

Thank you Klyde. :D:D

That's exactly what comes to mind when I look at it. I'd never fly in it. Ever. Just the same as I'd never have a small dog. Ever.

I know it sounds weird, but I think a 75 looks pretty odd when standing on it's legs. I dunno why, they just seem too lanky and awkward, sorta like a 208 without the cargo pod...

And speaking of my favorite plane, I think the caravan looks goofy when viewed from below. The wings just look too stubby and it's bloated out at the sides.

That 182 does look ind of weird and the main wheels brackets look too skinny

You mean the main gear legs, right? Those legs are actually pretty substantial tapered steel tubes. You'd find similar tubes on a Cessna 172 if the gear leg fairings were taken off. Then it would look stupid, too. The 182RG (and 210) just have the skinny legs because they have to retract into a slot, and cosmetic fairings would just add a whole bunch of hassle.

Cessna retracts are a pretty slick design really. Plenty of other low-winged retracts which are more complex, higher parts count and more things that move.

I'm just glad this thread isn't about awkward looking pilots!! :D
