Cowboy - yeehah!
Hypothetical plan, please weigh in with your op and ed.

I"m thinking of putting mogas/auto fuel in to an existing tank at our local airport. So, here's where I'd like some ideas from GA pilots. The tank, pump, and stuff is all grandfathered at an unincorporated grass field. Nearest field with mogas is 96NM away. Within easy flying distance of a major hub, just outside the mode C ring. 100LL is about 5 miles away and is competitively priced. Our field is grass, in fair condition 2600 x 70'. Pump would be attended most days, but sometimes by prior call only. Attended all daylight wknds. Still working out the details on access. All the planes on the field can and would use mogas, but it's not a high activity airport.

I would offer Mogas only, priced about $3.65 - $3.75/gal based on prices on 11/7. Of course, it would fluctuate, but be approx $1/gal cheaper than 100LL nearby. Assume your plane can burn Mogas(non-eth) of course. No oil, no charts, no cold drinks, outhouse toilet only.

A) Do you prefer 100LL or Mogas?

B ) Would you chose to stop at the grass field to save ~$1/gallon?

C) If not, is there a price point where you would be ok stopping at a grass field to save money?

D) Would you use it if there was a CC access point for the Pump (unattended)?

Engine in my plane is designed for Mo but not certified for it, but i'd be a good customer for some non-eth for all the generators, mowers, chain-saws and other stuff that doesn't like corn.

Walt at T14 is going to have it soon, and he's closer to you. I thought you had a C-180? AFAIK, those are all mogas approved.

There is only one field in my area (Nor Cal) that even has it and that is still 100 miles from me, so it would not be worth the hassle for me.

Assuming this hypothetical were nearby:
A. Mogas
B. Yes
C. N/A
D. Yes

I'd buy it, my plane is good on it and certified to run it, just make sure it's non ethanol.

Used to fill 15.5gal beer kegs with it and fuel up with a hand pump.

Pponk 470-50 conversion isn't approved.

I have an LSA/ROTAX and prefer MOGAS, (ethanol free if possible). I love grass strips. No credit card machine is necessary as long as I know your hours.

I prefer mogas, and definitely prefer grass. We have mogas at the farm, but it's a pain to find it without ethanol and truck it here.

I also prefer help fueling the airplane since I'm short and it's hard to reach the top of the wing easily.

A) Do you prefer 100LL or Mogas?

With my Rotax, I'll take auto fuel (even with ethanol) over 100LL if I can get it. I currently haul it in via 5 a 5 gallon can.

But I should point out, that I'm not exactly buying hundreds of gallons per month.

B ) Would you chose to stop at the grass field to save ~$1/gallon?

That would depend on where it is. Anywhere near ONZ? If it were, sure! I like grass fields, and I like auto fuel.

C) If not, is there a price point where you would be ok stopping at a grass field to save money?

At the same price, grass is easier on my tires so I would save money that way.

D) Would you use it if there was a CC access point for the Pump (unattended)?

Sure. But I will warn you that I often screw up the entry of my N number and just press enter rather than trying to fix it.

The problem I see is that the big volume fuel users are not the ones who will be using auto fuel. Us little guys are happy to use it, but don't provide the huge volume that the guy with the big daddy twin will.

Hypothetically (as in if I had an airplane capable of using mogas)

A) Mogas

B ) Would you chose to stop at the grass field to save ~$1/gallon?

$1/gallon wouldn't get me excited. If the field was a nice one to visit (not just fuel and run), it would increase my interest in going there just to get the mogas.

C) If not, is there a price point where you would be ok stopping at a grass field to save money?

$2-3/gallon or more in savings would be better. I'm ballparking taking at least 0.5 of hobbs/tach time for the diversion, landing, take-off. Again, if the place was nice to visit, the mogas would be a bonus.

D) Would you use it if there was a CC access point for the Pump (unattended)?

Yes

Thanks, keep em coming. as for the price, as it stands right now, buying 500 gal at a time only gets me a price of $2.9355/gal. Then I add 20.1375 cents in req tax so I'm at $3.14/gal in the tank. If I sell for $3.74, I have a 60 cent mark up on the gas and have to give something to the kid who comes over and pumps it.

Not trying to make money on the deal, just want to have mogas avail for me and my local guys, but I would sell what I could to others.

FWIW around here selling turned into a huge hassle with sales taxes, inspections, etc. There are several small airports around with fuel tanks but they all function as on-field co-ops with no sales to the general public.

Oops, the guy called back and said the price was for eth, which is cheaper. Now, he's telling me the non-eth is $3.28 all in. Grrrrrr. This is getting harder. Still want to get it done though.
