Thought one: Well, they are pretty accurate in showing how small these planes are.

Thought two: Wait a minute! There is no way they are under gross with Cam, Jay and a decent sized CFI there!

Not necessarily. Useful load varies greatly among 172s. Mine has a useful load of over 1,000 lbs and those three with full fuel wouldn't weigh that much.
