The "camping with a generator" discussion got me to thinking...dangerous I know...

The Jacks Fork River is the most beautiful stream in Missouri, bar none. There are no bottom fields for the first 24 floatable miles. It's basically a miniature box canyon.

A former tradition, that I've wandered away from for a few years, is to have a three day float (canoe trip) on the upper Jack. One person per boat, pack all your gear with you. Two nights of gravel bar camping with no one around for miles.

This trip has historically taken place the week before Memorial Day which, planning ahead to next year, would be the 20th thru 22nd. Early in the season is necessitated because The Upper Jack is not as well blessed with springs as other Ozark streams are and, on the average year, the upper section isn't floatable past early to mid June; the 4th of July on a good year.

This stretch of stream has always had great bass fishing but has become even better in more recent years since the MDC made it a "trophy small mouth stream." When the season is open (Memorial Day weekend) only 1 fish per day can be kept and it must be 18", as a result one can catch nice 1.5 to 2 pounders all day long and have a blast.

Are there any "stream people” (creek queers as we're called by the lake apes around here) who would be interested if I put a trip like this together next year?

It would be an easy shuttle from the Mountain View, MO airport (MNF) and I'd gladly rent a van for the weekend to shuttle folks who fly in. Canoe rentals and river shuttles are readily available.

We would float from Hwy 17 bridge (Buck Hollow) to Alley Springs, 24 miles and take three days to do it. Put-in Friday morning, take out Sunday afternoon (or Thurs to Sat if preferred). As far as I know, there is only one piece of private property on that entire stretch of river, Bunker Hill Retreat, it was formerly open to only Missouri state teachers but was opened up to the general public in the last year or so. Chris and I are staying there in a few weeks and floating.

Below are a few misc. photos of this beautiful stretch of earth. The Upper Jacks Fork...just a small stream that meanders near the edge of heaven.

Jamb-Up Bluff and Cave (the cave entrance is the tall hole centered and partially blocked by the tree) The water is really low here, must be the middle of the summer:

Jamb-Up from the inside, it's an easy boulder hop up to the entrance from the river (from MDC: Jam Up Bluff and Cave's river entrance of cave is one of the most spectacular cave entrances in state. Cave may be explored in daylight back to the lake which is plunge-basin for falls from upper part of cave.):

The "lake" inside Jamb-up. (One can swim the lake, shinny up the waterfall on the back side, and then trek through the upper cave and out the sink hole at the top of the bluff):

Nice! Couple of places on the Arkansas buffalo river are similar. Soo need to float the buffalo again...

The Buffalo is our favorite Ozark stream. The Jacks Fork is our Favorite Missouri Ozarks stream. The upper Buffalo has no Ozark peers.

Nice pics, looks like a really fun trip.

Very nice pictures... I think we just an idea where to go to for our next year's summer vacation ! :D

Thanks for posting the pictures, Tim. I haven't been on the Jack's Fork, but have spent some time on the Arkansas Buffalo. Looking at your pictures makes me want to go again! :)

Beautiful, but it sounds like the start of every college camping or Burt Reynolds movie I don't want to be in ...

I will consider it, although just like Ed's 6Y9 flyin, it's hard for a family man to get a pass on a holiday weekend to go off on a mancation.

Oh, and I forgot. The one piece of beauty on the river that's a combination of Man's and Mother Nature's creation.

Alley Spring. The take out spot. Missouri's 7th largest spring with an average flow of 130 CFS (or 84 million gallons/day). It's a really casual spot.

If you walk away from this three day float and visit to Alley Spring with any stress in your system then you really have issues! :goofy:

The spring itself...boiling straight up out of the ground. It's been explored to 3,000' and had an average depth along that exploration of 155'. Jump in on a hot day and your body will pull your nutsack right up to your throat! It's a wee bit cool.

Just got back from Three days on the river. Didn't gravel bar camp...took the luxury route this year and stayed at Bunker Hill Retreat.

As stated earlier in the thread Bunker Hill was formerly a private retreat only for members of the Missouri State Teachers Assn but was opened up to the general public two years ago.

Some photos:

Thursday evening at home...ready to roll:

Ahhh...it's a bluff!

And another one! (note the cool rock outcropping right above Chris' hat)

Oh, imagine that, another:

Oh, and a little spring along the way pouring out of the mouth of a cave (for scale note the nose of the canoe and Chis' hat in the lower left):

And a friendly cotton mouth. Good thing he was molting or he might have taken offense to me getting right up in his face:

attachment.php

Yep, you guessed it, another bluff:

Oh my:

The view from our cabin. Oh, look! It's a bluff. Surprise:

A shot of some of the cabins at Bunker Hill and their one room schoolhouse and chapel:

More Cabins:

And more looking from the river:

Another view of the retreat from the river:

Looking across the river from the gravel bar in front of the retreat. Oh, look, it's another bluff. Imagine that!

Bunker Hill owns over 2000 acres. Many hiking trails, a few caves to explore, etc. The private drive from the main gate down to the cabins is two miles long and it's quite picturesque as well:

No photos of Jam Up Bluff and Cave this trip...it had just rained and the boulders were pretty slick so the camera stayed in the boat.

And, we made our pilgrimage to Alley Spring today on the way home. No photos there either....forgot the camera in the car. :( (i.e. I'm a dumba**)

What a glorious weekend. I'm sure my blood pressure is at least 10 points lower than average tonight.

ahhhhhhhhhh....

Just got back from a spur of the moment three day trip, Fri-Sun. It was as glorious as ever. Didn't catch many fish though, bad timing, water was on its way down. Stayed at Bunker Hill again. What a great little spot.
