Minnesotans forced to drink good beer

Yeah, we've lost some big ones - Or they've outright gone out of business. But we do have Miller, Sprecher, Lakefront, and Horny Goat. And while they're not headquartered here, Leinenkugel's has a brewery in Milwaukee (which used to be used by G. Heilemann to produce Blatz). Add in the brewpubs like Water Street Brewery and the Milwaukee Alehouse (and many more), the beer is flowing freely here.

And, BTW, La Crosse lost their major brewery (G. Heilemann) too, so...

Horny Goat?

A few years when I was working in Appleton, WI, I heard on the local news that the state of WI had formed a DWI commission to study WI's DWI problems and make recommendations to the legislature. At that time (IIRC) WI was the only state without a felony DWI law.

It's still not a felony until the 4th offense within 5 years of a previous offense.

Hell, the first offense isn't even a misdemeanor unless there's a child under 16 in the vehicle!

And this is with our newly-strengthened drunk driving laws.

They read off the names of those on the commission. The names included the likes of Leinenkugel & Miller. I chucked and mumbled "yeah, like they're really going to get things done" :)

That's nothing... A few years ago, the state Attorney General got nailed for drunk driving - In a state-owned car!

Wisconsin has the best people and best cities of any state I've lived in (and that's probably about 30 now).

The people are genuine and have a work ethic second to none (except for possibly South Dakotans). Get into a conversation with a Wisconsinite and you'll know exactly who you're talking to within 30 minutes. Very few are running around pretending to be somebody they're not like so many people are in so many other states.

The cities (especially Madison and Milwaukee) are really nice. Madison is one of my favs.

Amen.

People in WI are REAL. I think it has something to do with dying if you go outside for 5 out of every 12 months. :D

As much as I joke about now being a pickup-truck-driving, cowboy-hat-wearing, gun-toting Texan, Mary and I are always proud to tell people that we were born and raised in Wisconsin.

Wow... Thanks guys! I do love it here, as do many others - There's a lot to love, including the biggest, best celebration of aviation in the world, coming very soon! (I can't wait!)

30 states - That's a lot, Tim! Wow!

I get very confused by people who pretend to be somebody they're not. I just don't get it. :dunno: I expect them to be who they act like, and... Well, I just don't get it. Luckily, I think pilots from ALL states tend to be genuine, hardworking people as well, which is why I like hanging out with them.

I have aught but good things to say about Wisconsin and it's denizens (with one or two exceptions, perhaps).

Nice save. Unfortunately I know plenty of Californians who are pretending to be somebody they are not. Don't worry, I love California and will probably never leave. I'm just saying with LA and everything the opportunities to be "fake" are here.

What I noticed when I spent about 18 months in SCal (Irvine & La Jolla) was that if you struck up a conversation with a stranger you'd quickly realize that they were "working you". Almost everyone was working an angle and trying to determine if they could make money off of you or screw you in some way. With that said, that experience was in the mid to late 80's. It's been a while since I was planted there for any length of time.

Yeah, I've had the (mis?) fortune of always having careers that involve travel. Right now I'm sitting in Tompkinsville, KY about an hour outside of Bowling Green. This is the first time I've "lived" in KY. It's "interesting". I'm here for about another month, three total. I get home every weekend (thanks to the 182) but I'm here all week...come out early Monday and head home about noon on Friday (I'm at home drinking a beer by 5pm!)

One thing I've come to realize is that you don't get a true feel for an area when you simply "travel through" no matter how many times you visit. But, stay there all week long, every week for two or three months and you'll really get to know the area. That's what I've done a lot of. It's a good thing I really like to travel because I've been doing it for 30 years.

There is a place called Bowling Green?

Then again, in California, we have:

Cool, CA

Confidence, CA

Likely, CA

Weed, CA

By the way, Stan,

To complete this hijack...

FWIW

Thanks, Tim. I've lived in 4 states, and I think I'm here to stay. These are my kind of people.

Several. The biggest ones are in Ohio and Kentucky. But, there are ones in Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, and Virginia as well. Also, the one in Ohio is home to Bowling Green University, with over 17,000 students...

Hey, I've landed at Weed! :D

We don't have a lot of names like that in WI, but here's some of my favorites from other states:

Truth or Consequences, NM
Climax, MI
Hell, MI

Then, there's Pennsylvania, where you can start out in Blue Ball... If you take a wrong turn you end up at Bird-In-Hand but if you continue heading the correct direction you go through Intercourse and end up in Paradise. http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=B...gIdy152-ylrrZ8lajjGiTHDDgnAzHmwfg&mra=ls&z=13

Then, there's the ones that just sound funny, of which Wisconsin has plenty (Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Oconomowoc, Mequon, Waukesha, Wausau, I could go on for quite a while). Shipshewana, IN.

Then there's the "identity crisis" cities - Mexico, MO. Paris, TX. Indiana, PA. California, PA. Quite a few more of those too.

I'm starting to think I've traveled the country a bit too much! :yikes:

Climax Springs, MO

It's exactly half way between sioux city and little rock (think about it...I have time).

I see your Petaluma "stuff" and raise you: Surly.

The town I like in Pennsylvania is Laboratory. I put on my best Gene Wilder and pronounce it loudly when I see the highway sign: La-bore-ah-tori.

When I flew CAP cadets, especially the young ladies, the first think I would ask is where they wanted to go. Some had opinions, but most just said they didn't know. I'd then ask if they'd like to go to Paris, then Italy. We'd joke around a bit until they caught on; then, it was usually big stuff. And I'd hear them telling friends about it later <g>
The guys usually had things they wanted to do.

Best,

Dave

I doubt you will find Surly in CA. I'll bring some to 6Y9, I think Gary might like it as well.

Tim

Tim,

I am impressed. If they sell it in California, I'll look for it next time. We have some very special beer warehouses out here (Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa) with a huge selection of very special beer.

OK - thanks! Can't wait.

I wasn't going to check any bags on my way from CA so that I would only have a carry on and I don't know if beer would make it to 6Y9 via three different airplanes or simply break or explode or get taken by TSA. You'll just have to wonder about CA wines and beer. Or should I say fantasize about. We have a lot to offer, beer wise, here and I would have loved to share it with all of you at the fly in.

And Hollywood is right up the road from California.

There is another climax in MN, not far from Fertile  , in the general area of Crookston ;) .

Been there too. I think the only business in town was a strip club, and that's not something I want to see in a town that consists of about eight houses... :hairraise:

Nah, the nudie club is in Shelly, MN one town over (I heard).

Don't worry about bringing beer Kimberly, we have plenty. The selection is a little limited locally but I intend to make a beer run to Wisconsin a week or two before the 6Y9 fly in. Don't expect me to buy all of the beer but I can get the beer drinking at 6Y9 off to a good start.

I think I may ship some wine from California (is is illegal to ship from CA to MI?) ahead of time to a certain someone in Michigan....

As long as he doesn't drink it all before the 6Y9 fly-in!

Thanks for bringing the beer, but I don't want to show up to the party empty handed! Besides, I live in / near "wine country" and not only do I wonder if these wines are available out there for sale, but I also wonder if they are cheaper here "at the source". Then again, nothing is cheap in California.

Oh and I guess I can't bring too many bottles since Ed's weight and balance is so god damned sensitive to weight . . . .

LOL.

Best wine I've had so far is from Arkansas and runs about $7 per bottle. We bought like 10 bottles the last time through.

You can get really good moonshine there as well.

Had to buy beer last night (a promise I made to a pilot on another website, one whom I've never met). It was to celebrate another pilot passing the checkride - I "virtually raised a glass" between CA and TX.

Saw this in the store and just had to buy it:
