Military trainer (?) down at Fallbrook CA (L18)

Looks like a T-28 to me. Sad to see a warbird meet this kind of fate.

Quick google search has both minimum take-off and landing distances for T-28 as 400 meters or just over 1300 ft.

dang, truly among one of the worst times to lose an engine. too late to put it back down, too soon to figure anything out

Looking at how the airplane ended up, very surprised the passenger was killed.

T28s are stout, as long as you don’t flip them (then it’s usually fatal).

Wonder if pax wasn’t properly buckled in or of harness failed?

how long would a bird like that run with the fuel selector in the OFF position?

Not long at Takeoff power. They cruise at 50 gph, so the thing is probably burning 70+ gph on takeoff.

Caveat: I know nothing about T28 systems, but I suppose if you shifted tanks after the run up and inadvertently selected off or an empty tank, that’s probably where you’d run out. Just a guess.

*I’m not implying the pilot ran it out of gas, but it did sound like it suddenly wasn’t getting any fuel.

Yeah. All ya have is just keep flying the plane until the crash is over and it looks like he did a good job of that. Cockpit is pretty much undamaged. Doesn’t seem like there would be serious injury or fatalities.
