Midwest POA June Brunch: June 22, 2024 1000 CDT, The Jet Room at KMSN, Madison, WI.

We would love to go, however, the Great Dane is getting sliced open today (unwanted puppy prevention) and we probably need to keep an eye on her.

I'm busy this weekend, so you guys should have great weather!

I'm going to try to make it. If all goes well I should be flying in from Kalamazoo KAZO. Will provide an update Saturday morning!

Unless the OVC015 improves by morning, I'm afraid I'm out.
Clouds will be below freezing.

There seems to be a fair bit of uncertainty in the forecast discussion.

I'm VFR only unfortunately, but here's hoping it works out. Most of the TAFs between me and there look sky clear so far except that last bit.

BTW for those who haven't been there, the restaurant is East of the hangars. From the ramp there's a path between the FBO and hangars and you have to walk out of the gate and down a sidewalk to get there, it's not far just not immediately obvious.

I’d say this is one of those situations where TAFs could be wrong. I’ll be making it at least to the airport before making a call about Wx. But like others, I’m not in FIKI equipment tomorrow and won’t penetrate layers.

NOAA 7 day is still showing mostly sunny for rpj and dpa tomorrow, with cloud cover <50% by 10am. My money is still on a pessimistic taf writer. Let's see what the 1200z taf looks like, and if it still sucks we can push until next weekend.

Well, no changes in the new taf, and all the other forecasts got worse to match :(

Let's reschedule for next weekend.

Now I gotta figure out somewhere else to fly today.

Yeah, clouds look thick here and word on the street is that it’s quite the strong inversion that’s keeping them low. It’ll require the new system moving through Sunday/Monday to push this airmass off.

Next weekend I’m a maybe but likely out. I could do breakfast potentially, but I’m off to go skiing in Colorado and traveling via automobile. The idea is that I’ll have 32 hours to convince the committee to approve of a [FIKI] airplane.

BDH?

Hmmm. Bases 23...tops 3000..... what time you want me at enw?

The funny thing is, the guy I brought the plane from dropped his Ovation at the shop after mine for a tank reseal. I was like, "hey, we should meet up there if our planes are done at the same time." But my estimate was 4 weeks and his was 8 weeks. Here we are at 9 weeks, and he is sending me pics of my plane while picking up his. Grrrr.

That doesn't seem funny at all :p

Is it just me? Or is this winter been especially tough to fly in? Or maybe I’m a chicken? I have been talking to a guy about a TKS Mooney Rocket. It’s this sort of weather that might make me cave…

We’re going over to KJEF for lunch. Clear over there.

Ceiling around here seems to be 1,300 - 1,500.

How do you guys determine the tops? Isn't an inversion good or yet issue is you might not be able to climb to the warmer air?

Being VFR only makes it easier!

For future consideration, how far is KJEF for everyone? They have a decent on-field restaurant. I’m there now.

I didn't know there was a restaurant there; appreciate the pirep. It's about 1.5hr for me. Only bad part is I think you're the furthest one west. Neal and I are probably the next closest, so it's a pretty long flight for most.

I was afraid of that. For me it was barely 40min with headwinds.

That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t go… I have a buddy down in that area somewhere. It would just be a bigger trip.

Gaston's has a pretty good breakfast. As does Buncles, heh.
Arkansas is in the Midwest.

that being said I’m going to be looking for spring season camping in one of the taildraggers… Arkansas is on the list.

Oh it's been crappy indeed. Would be absolutely perfect for my instrument training were it 15-20 F warmer! But turns out ice is a real thing.
And please tell me this is the Mooney Rocket you're looking at... Mooney M20K 305 Rocket w/TKS

The Mooney I’m looking at isn’t on the market, rather it’s already owned - just looking for a partner. If I had $360 to spend, I’d be looking at a P Baron or maybe a crusty ole Cheyenne.

Same (for that money I'd rather have a Baron even though I don't have MEL rating)! I just didn't think there were many Mooney's out there with TKS....

Hope the rocket works out!

Actually, the weather hasn't been all that bad here in Iowa for flying. I flew Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday in pretty nice conditions. Apart from the few really cold days around Christmas, it's been milder than normal.

Well, the forecast sucks for this Saturday. Maybe posting about it will reverse it like last weekend?

If you move it back to January 29 and not too late in the day, I actually plan to be flying to Chicago then and would be able to attend. Therefore, the weather should be really awesome from now through the 28th and then really terrible the morning of the 29th. Good luck, we're all counting on you.
