Article says it was a Piper Super Cruiser, not an Aztec. Picture would seem to confirm a rag & tube single engine.

Been a bad month for midair collisions, Lake Coeur d'Alene, Nevada yesterday, now this; second DHC Beaver floatplane full of passengers.

While all losses are tragic, those that take several family members are doubly so. Sadly, that's what occurred in this incident, and also in several recent crashes.

Godspeed to those lost, and prayers that the survivors will recover. It's been a bad summer.

Yeah. The first few online and TV stories all said Aztec and Beaver with no crash photos. When the photos became available, it was obvious the smaller plane was not an Aztec. That will teach me to quote early news articles. Turns out I knew both of the pilots involved.

Very sad for both families. And loss of a classic plane as well.
 
The video I saw showed a piece of metal labelled "experimental" which plane would that be?

Not sure. A lot of Cubs, PA12s and PA14s in Alaska have experimental placards due to modifications. That could be the situation. It wouldn't be the Beaver because it is used in an air taxi operation.
 
"According to information on file with the FAA Civil Aeromedical Institute, the pilot of the PA-12 was denied medical certification in June 2012 by the Alaska Regional Flight Surgeon due to vision problems. The denial was appealed and sustained in July 2012."

The PA-12 was also flying under an invalid N-number.
