End of April, I'm flying my Daughter and Granddaughters from Greenville, SC back to Dallas. I'd like to plan a stop on the way back and will be passing over the middle of Mississippi. I could go a big north to the Memphis area, or a bit south if there's something good to visit. GDs are 3 and 7 years old. Just wondered if someone knew of someplace fun where we could do more than get fuel.

We generally head over SQS (SIDON) and that is near half way on the trip which is near Greenwood Leflore (KGWO).

Thanks in advance.

Best,

Dave

LGLH Greenville MI.River City Cafe on field- it's "fair". Land 18R you'll rollout in front of the FBO.

I've been to Greenwood (KGWO) and the things I remember distinctly are the rattlesnake in the aquarium and the wild pig mounted like it is charging out of the wall. That was, I'm guessing, 8-9 years ago so they might have done some remodeling by now...

The guy running the FBO was pretty friendly and he let us use his conversion van as a crew car overnight. I can't remember much about the town, though.

I don't know so much about "fun" activities other than fueling, but we frequently stop at Key Field (MEI) in Meridian MS on our trips back and forth from NC to TX.

Reasonable fuel, and free self-serve hot dogs, soft-serve ice cream, and Starbucks coffee.

GWO is good too. BTDT but unless something's changed, no restaurant on field :)

Brookhaven ( 1R7 ) is a very nice stop, with reasonable fuel and nice folks. Steve See put me onto this one. Fuel's $4.44, they pump it. May be too far south of your route of flight. 5,000' of runway, so no worrie sthere.

Steve's 'drome is Copiah County ( M11 ), to where I have not yet been, but if Steve's there, it can't be bad. Gas is monster deal at $3.91 (who ever thought we'd say *that*?), but the 3,000' may be an issue for your professional-grade op-specs.

Just an update. I've moved the plane to 1R7 for a bigger single hangar (stacks of plane parts). Fuel prices @ 1R7 and @ M11 are likely to change soon. New managers at both FBOs. Now M11 pumps for you and 1R7 is strictly self-serve. Dave's been to 1R7 before. The new manager at M11 is working hard to develop a full service FBO with flight instruction and rental aircraft, but until the runway is replaced (which they're working on) it's not that comfortable for high performance twins.

Dave, if you're looking to catch a bite to eat on your planned stop, if you stop at Cleveland (RNV) give the Airport Grocery a call and they'll send a car out to pick you up. They use to be within walking distance but have since moved closer to town. Check ahead to be sure. http://airportgrocery.net/index.htm

Other points of interest along your route would be

Tupelo (TUP) - Tupelo Auto Museum http://www.tupeloautomuseum.com/index.php,
Elvis birthplace http://www.elvispresleybirthplace.com/

Tunica (UTA) - Blue and White Diner http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Reviews/1250/blue-white-restaurant
Casinos http://www.tunicatravel.com/casinos

Clarksdale (CKM)- Ground Zero
http://www.groundzerobluesclub.com/

I would call ahead to any of them to make sure ground transportation was available before making definite plans.

You know of course, if you decide to fly further south, I'd be happy to accomodate your group for lunch/dinner. Don't know how much time you're looking to spend for a stopover, but Jackson has opened a nice new Children's Museum. http://www.mississippichildrensmuseum.com/

If you do stop @ GWO I've had good experience with Cotton Belt Aviation.

Steve: It's always nice to see you. GWO is right on our route; I'll just have to look at some of your other suggestions. Food and fuel are essential; anything else the granddaughters might enjoy would just make the trip more memorable for them. I've even thought of just going to Gaston's, but it's a bit out of the way. I could land there with them, but would want them shuttled to Mountain Home for departure.

I really appreciate all the suggestions.

Best,

Dave

Although I grew up less than 40 miles from GWO I can't say I know much about the restaurants there. There are a couple of WWII warbirds based there.

If you're willing to divert as far as Gaston's, then you might consider Walnut Ridge (ARG) and the Parachute Inn restaurant on the field (closed Monday and Sunday). It's a diner with a 737 attached. There's a small Army Air Corps museum on the field, too. I think the runway is big enough for you. ;)

Thanks. Looks as if this will be on a Sunday unless something changes.
I liked Bruce's suggestion too. It wasn't that far out of the way. Havn't looked at the other suggestions yet. BTW, the girls would just love to have a Cracker Barrel Restaurant nearby <g>

Just thinking through things. As you now, Columbus MOA is north and south of there and I wind up going from Columbus to Sidon VOR to stay on the open corridor between the MOAs.

Best,

Dave

FWIW, the Columbus MOAs are cold on the weekends (even CBM RAPCON is closed on Saturdays and before noon on Sunday so MEM CTR controls the airspace). There are airports along your route in N. Miss. that have 24hr self-serve fuel but if you need ground transportation I'd recommend calling ahead for a Sunday flight.

Have a safe flight!
