Michael Crichton dead at 66

Re: Michael Creighton dead at 66

His books were great. He was one of the best writers, and will be missed. Thanks for the post.

Re: Michael Creighton dead at 66

One of his best books was "Airframe". Any pilot who hasn't read it will find it fascinating, but not for the reasons that might seem obvious based on the title. I don't know if it was adapted for a movie.

I thought

The concern about outsourcing the build and techniques for critical components to China, like Boeing has actually done? :fingerwag:

I agree Wayne. Completely awesome book.

We're not going to give the ending away! :raspberry:

You mean there's a downside? But, it's all the rage! And I'm sure all of the skilled machinists and aerospace workers in China would be offended by your callous remarks, if only they were paid enough to own computers and have electricity!

Hehe I remember reading airframe on a commercial flight:hairraise:. good book though

To be honest I hope thay don't turn it into a movie, as most of the Crighton book adaptations sucked pretty badly. Anyone remember Congo, Sphere, Rising Sun, and Jurassic park 2/3?

Re: Michael Creighton dead at 66

Sad, we're going to miss him. Best book by far was State of Fear. A remarkable look at human foibles and the depths to which gummints will go to maintain power.

I think Disney has the movie rights to Airframe...At least they no longer have Lindsay Lohan under contract, so there's no danger of her playing Casey.

The Andromeda Strain was good and followed the book well. It actually matched the images I had in the theater of my mind.

Don't forget "Disclosure" with "Gimme Moore" :vomit:

Gosh, maybe it's time to get "Airframe" back out and read it again. I loved all his books.

I REALLY liked "Sphere"...the book and the movie too.

We just watched the original "Andromeda Strain" movie a few weeks ago. It seemed better the first time I watched it years ago.

Congo did suck IMHO
Sphere did not suck as bad as Congo
Rising Sun was good, movie was excellent
JP3 was ok too.

I read The Andromeda Strain in 8th grade. I had an English teacher that did not know what to do with me as I was a grade level higher in reading and writing. So she let me pick out books that I wanted to read and then write book reports on them. In addition to AS I read 2001, Fantastic Voyage, and the Lord of the Rings that year.

The original, not the Ben Brat one. This habit of remaking excellent classic movies has got to stop. Aren't there more than enough excellent books in which they can make a completely original movie from?
Rest in peace, Michael. You'll be missed.

Well Rising sun wasn't that bad as a movie, but the book was WAY better, although that tends to be the case with most book adaptions. And on the subject of remakes, have you seen the previews for "The Day the Earth Stood Still"??? Keeanu Reeves as Klaatu????

That's weird- I thought the robot was named Klaatu, but even the credits for the old version list Klaatu as the humanoid alien emissary(?) Wasn't the whole "Klaatu veradu nictu" thing about a specific command for the robot?

At any rate, it's another classic being messed with for no good reason. :rolleyes2:

Only good thing about the remake of War of the Worlds was that they shot a lot of it near my home... although after Welles' brilliant radio staging of that classic story, there wasn't much point in making even the first movie version, IMHO.

Next thing you know, there will be a musical stage version, then a movie version of the musical, then a stage production of the movie version of the musical... :rolleyes2:

Crichton was not my favorite story-teller, but he always came up with a fascinating idea and supported it with lots of hard facts. Very sad that left us the way he did. :frown3:

:rofl: That's pretty much what happened with "The Producers" only it was better than that.

"The Producers" was a movie comedy about a musical for the stage, followed twenty years later by a comedic stage musical based on the movie comedy about a musical for the stage, followed by a musical comedy movie version of the comedic stage musical based on the movie comedy about a musical for the stage.

maybe in the alien language one uses the personal pronoun of the speaker to indicate who the words are coming from? The robot was named Gort according to IMDB

There is also this trivia
In the original story, the robot, Gort, was the master - Klaatu was merely one of a series of doubles, or maybe clones, that died after a short time.
So perhaps the line was written for Gort to give to Klaatu. When the roles of master were swaped the line went to Klaatu but was not re-written to indicate the change.

That's a great example... how anyone could dare to try to improve on such a classic is amazing to me. Damn funny movie.

Then there's Hairspray... okay, it's gone from screen to stage... why re-make the movie? And the casting...??
There was always something creepy about Divine (which was part of why it was funny), but John Travolta in the same role is downright scary! :D

Could be right, although in my (long ago) memory the alien said this was the phrase that would effectively tell the robot to "stand down." Hmmm... this is a very good excuse to rent it and watch it again. :D
