Two questions:
1. Do you need a medical certificate for a recreaction pilot certificate.
2. Do you need a medical certificate before being able to solo while training for a private pilot certificate.
Thanks for any help. Pat

Yes.
61.23(a)(3)(ii)

Yes.
61.3(c)

If I'm wrong, someone will let us know very soon. :)

Pat, you sound pretty new, so to avoid confusion the numbers referenced in Chris' post above refer to specific rules that can be found in the Federal Aviation Regulations, which you should have if you're in training for becoming a pilot of any type. If you don't have a copy, a current version can be found here.

It's not clear exactly what you are trying to do and if you are or may not concerned about passing - but if you think you might fail a medical, it is better to not take it because the failure will lock you out of the sport pilot option (assuming whatever might cause you to fail a medical doesn't affect your ability to safely operate an aircraft...)

As Geoff said, the regulatory answers above are correct, but may not fully answer your needs. Can you give us an idea of what you're trying to accomplish? It may be that the no-medical-required Light Sport Pilot certificate may be what you're really looking for.

I'm not so sure...IIRC, neither balloons nor sailplanes require medicals, even at the commercial level. They're aircraft too.

Could be. But I think the below fairly strongly implies SE fixed wing- I don't know of a rec. pilot cert for balloon or glider. :dunno:

Well there were two questions, one about the recreational cert and the other about private. John's responsw makes sense WRT the 2nd.

BTW, while I'm pretty certain that you've all answered the questions Pat intended to ask, technically the answer to the 2nd question is "no" in that a medical cert isn't required "before being able to solo". You can take all the pre-solo dual you want without a medical in an airplane.
