Bill: The hated tax regulations are still in effect. However, today's meeting of Maine State Senators Taxation Committee was attended by a good representation of pilots, representatives of many businesses -- aviation and otherwise -- who were supporting the two pending actions which would repeal the current tax laws which have infuriated aviators throughout the United States. Mark Kimberling, the AOPA Director of State Government Affairs was there. He reminded the senators that via AOPA publicity it's unlikely that nearly 500,000 members don't know about the current laws and that it's been repeatedly written by many that members will stay away from Maine as long as the current statutes exist.
My "3 minutes" and the testimony of many others had obvious impact. After the meeting, during corridor conversations between attendees and some senators, at least two senators expressed opinions indicating that at next week's work session it looks favorable that the two new bills will be enacted, thereby repealing current regulations.
It was a good session. Photo is Mark Kimberling, AOPA.
