Lycoming Thunderbolt Engine on "How It's Made"

So,... will we see Ted on there?

I was down there when they were doing some filming on the dynos. I'm pretty sure that if you see any part of my body it's going to be my hand, but you may see some of my handywork. If you see a tall, thin girl with blond hair (I think that was before I was doing the ponytail look) that's probably me. ;)

It's worth noting that I have no idea what they're actually showing - I haven't seen any of the footage.

The filming process is pretty interesting. They were here for a few days doing lots of filming on a tight schedule. Nice people, I enjoyed it.

By the way - any chance anyone has some sort of DVR or whatever who could record it for me in a digital format? I don't have one, and I don't even have cable. I'd definitely like a copy, even though I'm about 99% sure I'm not actually in it. :)

I can, but you may want to remind me in a couple of weeks. I only have program data through the 20th at this point. Once the data shows up for me I'll set it and figure out a way to get you the raw mpeg file.

Uhh,.. I have a VHS tape,...

I"ll try to tape it if I can. Someday i'll get new technology....

VHS tapes are now vintage. They are no longer being made or sold. What you see in stores is all there will be. It took about 30 years but video tape for home use seems to have gone the way of the dinosaurs.

I'll try and DVR it and then spit it out to a DVD.

I'm guessing camera film won't be too far behind. I went to Wal-Mart before XMas to get some film for my SLR and we really had to search for it. It doesn't seem very long ago that there was an entire isle devoted to different speeds, manufacturers, etc. Now there are two rows of pegs stuck between the camera cases and cheapo frames. You can get 3-packs of 200, 400, 800, 1000 in either Kodak or Fuji. Or you can get single-packs of Advantix. Or one speed of B&W. Those are your choices. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200. The new 'Super' Wal-Mart that opened here last summer doesn't even have a 1-hour film developing anymore. Am I really getting that old!? Pretty soon I'll have to go to a speciality or antique store to get film for my 'ancient' Canon EOS Rebel film SLR!! :(

Well your first mistake was going to Wally world for anything. But I have seen film become harder to get but it is not impossible. most good camera stores still have a wide variety as people still are shooting film for a variety of purposes.

The one thing I have really noticed is that is becoming harder to get film developed. I had slides that needed processing and were shipped to Atlanta.

I know I know...

Luckily, we are 'blessed' with 2 Wal-Marts in this town and the old one still has film processing, as well as Target across the street from 'new' Wal-Mart. I don't think we even have a 'camera' shop in Ames. I'm sure there's something in DSM, though.

Once I used previously mentioned film at XMas, I wanted to get it developed, but I didn't want the pics, I just wanted them on CD, which is how I found out that 'new' Wal-Mart doesn't do film stuff anymore (other than send-out, which wouldn't do CD-only). The Wal-Mart girl told me to try Target. :)

Besides, you should really be shooting E-6 if you insist on using a film camera. I still like to burn up a roll of Velvia from time to time in my OM-2.

I knew there was something I liked about you...you have good taste in cameras. I've got a bunch of OM gear, and I wasn't happy with any of the DSLRs out there until I found the E-410, which handles more like an OM than anything else out there.

Yup, the library won't even take our good tapes for their rental / loan movie shelf. Only DVDs. The tapes are being discarded as they wear out. Anybody want some movie VHS tapes? :-)

Our library switched to all DVD in 2007. We just were not seeing VHS circulate anymore. But a new problem with carrying DVD arose. That is that people treat the discs pretty poor. So we had to invest in a disk polisher and conditioner. Now when DVDs come in Tech. Services runs them through a polish and clean before putting back into circulation.

I'd get a copy to ya, but I don't have HD here, and I'm sure you want the good stuff :D

(Apologies to Ted, but I can't help myself:devil:)

Voiceover in the LOP segment:

"Lean of Peak operations have been proposed as a 'radical' new way of operating aircraft engines. We at Lycoming want to caution the General Aviation population that Lean of Peak is the Devil's work. It will lead to blown cylinders, leaking gaskets, fouled plugs, male pattern baldness, birth defects, Democrats in the White House, dogs and cats living together, soap scum, crabgrass, premature ejaculation, and mass hysteria. Please see our most recent guidance, SB 1094 revF (dated 9/1994) for our most up to date thinking on this subject."

Subtext : "Only in the state of California"

As a reminder, that's this Friday. Gentleman, set your DVRs. ;)

Doubly so for those of you who generously offered to DVR it and then spit out a CD/DVD to send to me. Here's the reminder! :)

I'm in the same situation, no cable, no DVR. Would be neat to see!
Yeah, I can. I'll set the TiVo.

I thought those guys only showed you "How Things Are Made" in Canada.

They get outside of Canada everyonce and a while. The one on pocket knives was done as Case in PA. I love Case knives and watched that one with great interest.

But since the show is produced in Canada they do focus in on things Made in Canada.

A Canadian production has to do 20(?)% Canadian content. They get a government subsidy.

That's what gave birth to the MacKenzie brothers on SCTV. They said they'd do that as the Canadian content.

Look for the Canada logo in the credits.

I have seen that. I know what it is for. I am just not sure what you mean. The show is a Canadian show that focuses in on Canadian industry. I am not surprised. I do know they go outside of Canada for a few items though. I think the teapot episode was done in an English silversmith factory.

The Canada National whatever Film and Television subsidy behind that logo is encourage Canadian origin content...originally in opposition to all of the U.S. TV sitcoms and such that are otherwise on Canadian TV.

I like watching "Holmes on Homes" even if I had to figure out for myself that "Hydro" means "Electric company" and building codes are (not) enforced by "The Crown."

DiVR is set
I will not watch it. I am boycotting all things from the evil Canadian aggressors who attacked us so violently with their use of terrorist waterfowl:rofl::rofl:

Blame Canada. With all their beady little eyes and flapping heads so full of lies
Blame Canada!! Blame Canada!!!
We need to form a full assault. It's Canada's fault!

This is but a propaganda piece from the Canadians to make us think they are the developers of this fine LOP operating engine!! I fear it is prelude to full invasion of PA!

But I am ready for them!!

Dear Scott,

We all love you, even those of us who don't. We care about your well being, and we want you to be around for years to come. That said, love must be firm, so I'm going to say this to you only once.

Put down the bong, and stop smoking crack. Seriously, it's bad for you.

Love,
Ted

P.S. You're only allowed to reuse the crazy Santa avatar. The avatar you now have is a repeat of what you had when I first joined PoA (and went by iSmellTheFlowers). As such, you must remove it and replace it with something new and original.

-------------

Everyone else: Watch it and enjoy! I'm probably going to end up missing it tomorrow night due to my travel schedule, so I'm relying on someone being able to burn it to DVD for me. :)

I'm not so sure that I studied much in college, but despite serving my time in Brooklyn, I was always one of the boring kids that would rather actually do something rather than do drugs. These days I get high with airplanes. ;)

Point remains: Scott, stop smoking crack. :)

Happy now!!!

:yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes:

No, because you clearly haven't stopped smoking crack! :nono:

On second thought, this is Scott at his best. Glad to have you back, Scott. Hope there were lots of cute nurses in rehab.

And you definitely have me  with that.

I guess I'm just going to have to ignore Scott agian... someone let me know when he stops the totally gross avatars.

La La La La LA.... I can't hear you Scott....

The world is once again safe, Melissa. Scott has changed his avatar back to something that's more appealing to the masses.

Last reminder: Everyone watch tonight!

Also since I am now without cable (yes I got my converter box) could whoever records the show for Ted send me a copy as well?

thanks
