Love your son? -->Don't<-- give him a Lamborghini

Of course, after he burned it to the ground he was downgraded to a Japanese Sportscar. I hope he recovers from his latest mishap, he can then be given a crotch rocket to see if he can REALLY kill himself.

By the way since I don't watch TV I've never seen the show. I'm sure it's a gem.

I dunno. Hulk's a good father (very over-protective, the way a parent should be). Also - Nick works on cars all the time and has a very healthy respect for them.

I think there's more (or less) to this story than has been reported.

and if his name wasn't Hogan, it wouldn't have made the news at all. The local news reported it as well amidst the stories of steel and concrete peeling off the overpasses and bridges or highways route 1, route 93, and route 128.
Maybe it was used to lighten up the general theme and tone of the news.

Is it just me, or is there not something very, very wrong about giving a 17yo...any 17 yo...a Lamborghini?

The article says his accident in the Lambo was a year ago. That would make him a 16 YO Lamborghini driver. Totally stupid. I think 'ole Hulk has taken too many hits to the noggin...

In HS I knew a girl who got her father's hand-me-down 3 yr old Porsche 911 when she got her student driver permit. Within months she came roaring into a parking lot and totalled it between two parked cars.

For her 16th birthday she got her very own brand new shiney black Carrera. She rolled it that summer. Daddy bought her another. Within 2 yrs she had caused 7 (yes, seven) roll over single car accidents. Fortunately none of her pax suffered more than minor injuries.

I lost track of her escapades after that.

I had a friend in high school who's grand parents bought him a brand new Plymouth GTX 440 as a graduation present. He actually drove it very conservatively while in traffic, and would only step into it when conditions permitted it to be done with minimal risk. I didn't stay in touch with him very long after graduation but as far as I know he never wrecked it. On the whole however, I think it's generally a bad idea to give such high performance automobiles to teenagers.

Maybe it's just how I was raised but my folks absolutely refused to "give" me a car. If I wanted one I was responsible for saving enough money for the purchase price as well as insurance, fuel and upkeep. As I approached my 17th birthday I had saved enough money from the 2 jobs I was working for a decent ride (you know, a Pacer or something similar :))

Fortunatly my boss at the time had a '68 Cutlass he was going to sell to the scrap yard for $50 and agreed to sell it to me for half that. I had to idle it the 15 miles to the house and spent the next 1.5 months rebuilding the engine so the dang thing would run. Kept that ride for about 2 years before selling.

With that being my background, I'll never understand why parents would buy their child a vehicle.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

My dad gave me my first car (a 1965 Corvair - in 1974) that he bought new in 1965. It was well cared for, but worth less than the cost of transporting me back and forth to college for one semester. With the gift of the car, I got to pay the fuel, maintenance, insurance, etc. In the end it saved my dad money and gave me transportation.

My kids got to drive old Mercedes 240D's as their first cars. Pretty near indestructable.

Kevin,

You (and I even) grew up in a time where teenager could hold a decent paying job. It seems that no one in the State Legislature, in iowa at least, held a job as a teenager.

I had friends with old beater cars who managed to wreck them too, sometimes hurting themselves and others. I dont think it really matters what kind of car a 16 yr old has, odds are they are going to wreck it.

That is gonna cost a few AMUs

Hey, the wealthy privileged are entitled to be just as stupid and immature as the rest of us!

We didn't make enough money to afford to buy me a car when I was a teenager. I had a job, but all my money went towards flight training so I couldn't buy myself a car. Of course, I never bother getting my driver license until I was 18. I used to ride my bike to the airport all the time.

(Can I say "bike" on the blue board?)

The problem for a lot of us people that didn't grow up in a big city was pretty clear. How do I get to a job when the nearest job is 20 miles away and I don't have a car?

My solution was to make my money on the internet. That worked for my first vehicle. Once that blew up I was kind of hosed again and found a place that would sell me a car at a 30% interest rate. I busted my ass to learn to fly and pay for that car at the same time. It took me about a year--but it was a good deal when that car was paid off.

I have never been in a car accident. Although I've got a driving record that wouldn't fit in Kent's semi.

haha nick, you scared me for a second there. putting words in my mouth...

Geez, Scott, Lovey says how can we assume Briggs was drinking? Just cause he was at two bars for hours and left his $250,000 car wrecked on the Edens and got a ride home... :dunno:

It's ONLY a misdemeanor!

Well he is a pro-athlete so we should give him a break right? 'Cause Vick got off so easy. I am so tired of these spoiled athletes. I am actually rooting for the owners these days.

But, will he keep his nose clean? Tis the question!

Any bets in his favor?

Hmmm...

Bollea was taken from the courtroom straight to jail. A few days later the sheriff's office released his jail house phone calls.

The most damaging calls caught Bollea on tape bad mouthing Graziano [the kid with permanent brain damage from the accident] and making plans for a reality tv show.

Graziano knew what he was doing just as much as Nick did. To villify Nick because Graziano was hurt in the accident is lame.

Its a shame, but Nick was over punished. Now I hope he can recover.
