Looking for Maule tailwheel

Can you get creative with an alternate solution - even if only temporary? Have you browsed the local farm supply store? We had rollers, wheels, casters, etc. for all different types of equipment on the farm. As long as the designed weight is close to the weight on your tailwheel, it should come close to feeling the need until you can get a 'real' tailwheel.
 
Put it on a lathe or arbor spin it up and true it up with a grinder or appropriate tool.
 
Wagaero also lists it. Which one do you need?

Send it to me.... I will chuck it up in the lathe and make it round again... No Charge...;)

It seems they are in here all the time.. You could just give it to them, I can machine the wheel in 15 minutes and hand it back to them...:dunno:

Carve it true by eye with your knife without even dismounting it. Sometimes I do that with our racing Razor wheels to avoid replacement a bit.

Funny. I don't know the pilots of that plane, but I know the owners pretty well. I forgot they even owned it until just now.

My Matco tailwheel uses an industrial caster wheel.

I believe that to be the one I need. Problem is it is backordered until July. Any clue where I can find one of these that is round and isn't back-ordered? I don't care if its used...

He said he didn't want to wait. I didn't read that he wanted it cheaper. Did he specify cheaper? :dunno: Besides, a couple of the options were "or best offer". It wouldn't hurt to lowball bid. I just gave him options.

No prob. Just that I looked at eBay also and saw no options so I wondered what you saw that I didn't.

I made my own tailwheel by converting a non-castering homebuilder's wheel to a castering, using my own release mechanism inspired by Matco's. Works well.

Any clue if its a pretty direct swap going from the Maule to the Matco? That's a pretty tempting option. My Maule doesn't look...new by any means.

WHLT- 6
This wheel has been designed to release with light spring tension and can accomodate either a 1.25 or 1.50 wide spring (Use part number WHLTWB-1 adapter for 1.75 inch wide springs). When a 1.50 inch spring is used, a .25 inch spacer should be used between the base and the spring.

Its' a direct swap for the Maule isn't it when using the spacer? The Matco is a great cost effective choice, and it is lighter if I recall? Spring tension release has always been reliable, and I've flown nearly all of the different Matco's now including the newer dual fork design which are an excellent product!
 
FWIW I just ordered the 6" pneumatic Matco. The guy I talked to at Matco tried to steer me towards the 7" if I could because of potential rim-strike issues if you don't keep the 6" at the right pressure but I really don't want the tail to be any higher than it already is.

I really have no clue if it's a direct swap. What width spring does the Maule use?

This means I'll have a Maule tailwheel up for sale soon if anyone is interested. The tailwheel assembly itself seems to work well and I've had no problems. It doesn't shimmy and I have no issues making it go full swivel if I want. That said, the solid tire on it isn't exactly round and goes "thump thump thump" as you taxi.

Lathe and a belt sander to round that hog out.
