My husband is looking to finish up an A&P. He's been wrenching for many years under the supervision of A&P's, doing rebuilds and refurbishments, helping with annual inspections (even on a jet!), and is collecting letters from all those supervisors for the FAA to document all that experience. He's looking for a program where he could spend a few weeks of formal "finish up" studying with an instructor, and take the written and practical exams to actually get the A&P. I know little about this kind of thing. There doesn't seem to be any such school here in AK, so this'll involve a trip to the lower 48 no matter what. Any recommendations?

There is a good one over in Daytona Beach, I sent a couple of guys over there a year ago.

There is one in Philly that I think is somehow connected to KPNE. Don't know much about it though.

A couple of my mechanics have used Federal exams in OKC to get the A&P once they had the experience. They were happy with the service.

Not meaning to take over the thread but I have a bit of the opposite problem. I got my A&P in 1991 but due to curcumstances havn't worked on airplanes in about 14 years. I'm interested in getting back into the industry. Anyone have advice on the best way to refresh my knowledge and skills? None of the local FBO's seem interested in taking on an out of practice A&P which I can certainly understand. Thanks for any forth coming info. Karl

I'm not familiar with any A&P "refresher" course. The best thing I can advise is find a Mechanic or shop that will let you work there.

Good Luck.

Karl,

Want to move to Kansas? It's not that bad.

There are several outfits that advertise in Trade-A-Plane that prepare a person for the written-oral-practical tests. In oeder to take the tests, you must firts have the letter from the FSDO authorizing it. Then you have 30 days to test before the authorization runs out. When I was preparing to sit for the IA exam I was having trouble doing any serious studying. I signed up for a "school" in Riverside California that advertised test prep with lodging within walking distance. "Let's go said my spouse--we'll hit Disneyland, our kid in Phoenix, Grand Canyon, etc, etc".:D

Well the lodging was a DUMP I mean a DUMP.:yikes: When we got to the room there was only a couple of sheets left on the toilet paper roll. When we asked for more we were asked why we wanted more when there was still some left!!! :nono:Since my wife wanted to have some freedom while I was in class and the dump was indeed withing walking distance to the "school" we stayed.:frown2:

When I showed up for "class" I was put in a room by myself with the same materials I been using at home and told to study. If I had a question I was to ask and I would get help. After a couple of answers that I knew were wrong, I decided to just trust my own interpretation of the study material.

I lasted through the second day. The morning of the third day I said "Give me the test!!"

I did manage a passing score and do have an I.A.:D

With the tution, motel bill, Disneyland, Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater, Kid's visits, Gas, etc I think my I.A. was a bargain at 4-5K.

That's my experience with one such prep school.

Cheers:

Kevin, I appreciate the suggestion about Kansas but to many family obligations to move that far from Carolina. Besides I'd miss the ocean out this way to much.:) Karl
