A friend of mine (not a CFI) has a twin. I am not multi-engine rated. If we fly in his airplane together and he lets me take the controls for part of the trip, can I log it as PIC (sole manipulator)? If not it is useful to log it as something else (since it would not be dual without a CFI).

Can you find a 61.51 logging box your scenario fits in? If not, you can't log anything for any FAA purpose.

The "sole manipulator" in FAR 61.51(e) is "sole manipulator of the controls of an aircraft for which the pilot is rated, or has sport pilot privileges"

Not "rated" in the airplane...no on the PIC. Does the airplane require two pilots? If not then you can't log SIC time, but even if it did, you still aren't rated in the airplane so you still couldn't log SIC time.

No. Just like your non-pilot friends can't log the time you let them handle the yoke.
