Well, I got called for jury duty so here in sit at the City/County building. I have filled out my questionnaire and I'm just waiting to see if I get selected. This is a first for me.

A co-worker suggested adding "so sayeth the master" after every statement...you know for theatrical emphasis :).

You could also try "in my pants" because that makes almost every statement humorous in a 4th grade sort of way.

Are you guilty or innocent? Let's just get it over with. To try you would be expensive for the taxpayers.

The Court of PoA is far swifter and more efficient at assessing evidence and rendering (generally guilty :p) verdicts - maybe Stingray can improve things in that respect in the taxpayer justice system by passing on some of that valuable experience. ;)

I agree. I have already tried and convicted Stingray. I just need a final admission of guilt before sentence is pronounced. I think I have tried and convicted almost everyone else here to. :)
 
In over 50 cycles around a small yellow star the locals call Sol I've only been called once. I was able to keep my rather well-informed and highly opinionated self off the jury, and went home.
 
Civic duty and all that aside, I've been called a few time but only served once. I found it quite interesting; very theatrical; informative. If you're inclined, go sit in a courtroom to see what's going on.

There are some Lawyers here on POA. How about one of them starts "interviewing" you or what ever its called. What is the case?

Almost as much of a red flag as asking about nullification.
 
I've had jury duty three times.
never got my name called... until one day. I went to the bathroom after 2 cups of coffee and when I came back, a guy said they called you. I thought he was kidding.
He wasn't.
Ended up being a 4 day long trial.
Pretty interesting though, and got to put a schmuck behind bars who definitely needed it.
It was nice to be off work too lol.
 
I was called for jury duty here in Juneau. I did not have to report just call in every Friday and see if I was selected. The thing was I had to call in for 2 months every Friday. I forgot to call one Friday and was selected to report on Monday. Called Monday and was excused. Here in Alaska they select from a list of folks collecting the PFD (permanent fund).
 
Got called once, sat around all day and eventually was sent home...so sayeth the master..in my pants.
 
The easiest way to get out of jury duty is to become a convicted felon.....:rolleyes:

Here in New Mexico I believe jury duty is for 2 months. Just call in every Thursday.

4 day work weeks here.

I lived in Alaska for 7 years, and the only time I was called in was the day I was leaving Alaska. I was excused...:)

So the jury selection was in the morning, and the trial began straight away that same day, lasting possibly multiple days?

I suppose if you have a small child to care for, or even a dog that needs to be let out during the day, you would have to be prepared for care during the day to begin immediately, when you show up for the selection process.

I didn't know it happened so fast.
 
Just ask repeatedly in a worried excited manner about every 5 minutes "will we be drug tested afterward"?!
you may get excused.
 
My last stint was 6 or 7 weeks in the box and 2 weeks sequestered for a county court.
We didn't convict the kid.
After the verdict was read, everyone was sent home, but the judge had the entire jury, the DA and the defense lawyer and one of the police officers who had testified in the case escorted to his chambers where he interrogated us as to why we didn't convict.
We explained that the story told by the police did not fit the evidence the DA presented, and gave him some specifics.
At that point the judge thanked us all, told us we were free to leave. As we left his office, State Troopers tapped the DA and the local police office on the shoulders and took them to another room, where they were handcuffed and arrested. The jury was then escorted back into the judges chambers along with the defense attorney, where they told us that the kid who was being arrested and tried had nothing to do with the assault, the police KNEW he had nothing to do with the assault, and in fact had given the person who committed the crime full and total immunity, then, realizing their mistake, had deliberately falsified evidence against the kid they arrested. The DA had full knowledge of what was going on, had withheld vital evidence, destroyed other evidence, then they all perjured themselves.
I have been called for jury duty 6 times since then. I mention that trial, and I'm tossed out on the sidewalk for another 2 years.
 
Here (maybe all of Oregon, not sure, but at least my county) the summons means you need to check in for the entire month. Since I travel for work I asked them to defer it a couple months so my employer could make sure I was working from home for the entire month. So, I'm now on the hook for October.
 
I'm 59 and have had my driver license and been registered to vote continuously since I was 16 & 18 respectively. Those are two prime places that jury pools come from. Still I have only been sent notice to call in three or four times in my life and never had to show up. Those few times were all while I was in my 30s if I recall correctly. So I am amazed at the number of times some of you have received notice, had to go to court and even serve.

Maybe I'm on some sort of jury black list now? :dunno:

I've actually never been tapped for jury duty. Of course saying that I'll probably get my first notice in the mail tomorrow.
 
Two words : Jury Nullifcation. Say them, you're out.

Meanwhile, I'm planning on wearing my monkey shirt to my next Jury summons and telling the nice judge all about how I got it and that @eman1200 sent it to me in a box of dicks.

That ought to take care of it. Haha.

Wow, Colorado has the one day, one trial, system. So you are only on the hook for one day unless you get selected. You can call the business day before to see if you even need to show up. I only had to show up once in +-30 years. But I lived most of that time in an unpopulated county with few trials, apparently.

Make the best of it. It can be interesting.

I've sat on three juries -- one civil and two criminal, in two different states -- most recently two weeks ago. All the trials were very different.

But I won't say more until you're done. Reading about other trials can be prejudicial.

Been called 6 or 7 times. Served twice, been excused for conflict of interest once and excused after showing up when suspect plea bargined at last instant.
 
Guilty of attempted murder. Guilty on one count of arson. Not guilty on the second count of arson.

The defendant was accused of pouring gasoline on his then girlfriend and then setting her on fire. The injuries were horrific but somehow she managed to survive. He also tried to burn down the house with 2 children asleep upstairs.

This was a sad case. Everyone in the house (except the children) was doing drugs all day. CPS has taken custody of the children and they are in foster care.

I was not happy about being summoned but now I am glad I had the opportunity to participate. It was very interesting to see our justice system in action.

Well, "justice" anyway.

I wouldn't call that Justice until the jury got to pour a can on him and throw matches.
