How many airports get rid of derelict aircraft or just let them sit around.

As long as somebody is paying the bill, they'll sit.

I'd imagine if the space is being paid for appropriately they wouldn't have reason to get rid of it?

There's a Mooney at my home field(no, not my Mooney) with no engine that's apparently been there for many years. For the eclipse they moved it off the main ramp out onto a closed taxiway, but it's still sitting there. It's probably cheaper for them to leave it parked than to try and deal with the hassles of legally getting rid of it.

I would think that metal scrappers would happily take that much aluminum.

I was surprised to find this just sitting at Valkaria Airport, near Melbourne, FL:

There are a ton of planes at Deer Valley that have been sitting there for probably longer than I have been alive.

man, that's sad. Someone parked it one day, and probably didn't imagine that'd be the last time it ever flew.

I post this every time something like this comes up.... and it amazes me they're still there. These planes were there 27 years ago (!!) when I was at UMR, and apparently they're still there:

Three DC-3s.
OK, Rolla National Airport. What is the difference between Rolla Airport, Rolla National Airport, and Rolla International Airport (assuming that there were three airports in Rolla)?

There's a one at GPT been that's sitting for decades, old Martin 404 or DC something, twin engine. Heard it was a drug plane.

No idea. Doesn't "International" imply customs service? if it ever had that, it was long gone by the time I was there. We always used "Rolla National" for the airport name (CTAF). There's a "Rolla Downtown" that's a separate airport on the southern edge of Rolla. KVIH is really in Vichy, Mo.

Never heard of a "Rolla Airport".

Those national preserve style parking jobs can't possibly be earning rent. That's the airport management being apathetic towards the optics such a sight reflect on the airport. "the check ain't bouncing..." types abound in all occupations. Hangar mummies are a different discussion entirely. If you keep it out of sight and the rent is paid or you own the hangar, it is America after all....

Aluminum re-cyclers consider aircraft "dirty" aluminum.. they have too much other metal in the mix. nuts bolts etc. cleaning it removes the profit.

I saw one being cut up the other day. It's amazing how fast sawz all can take a Cessna wing off. The guy had a semi trailer and a few saws from what I could see.

Or the owner/pilot died and the heirs, if any, had no knowledge of the plane or any idea what to do with it.

Can you get a salvage "title" on an airplane?

Parts spares for the one on the ramp?

Maybe? Probably? Those planes got "rearranged" during at least one tornado. And it's not like they're in the desert southwest. How much would still be salvageable after sitting outside in central Missouri for 30 years?

(Might be "lots", I dunno.)

There was an abandoned DC-3 sitting on the airport property in Kotzebue, AK. Some people came in and took the engines and props and a lot of other parts from it. They carefully removed and stored the wings to pick up at a later date. Then an airport employee decided to move the wings with a bull dozer so he could move snow....:frown2:

From what I was told that plane had sat for about 30 years.

It would be easier to name an airport ,that doesn't have any abandoned/ derelict airplanes.
